Tuna, as I have experienced it, is pretty much just stinky cat food. I know people eat it, but I always wonder how they can stand it with the terrible smell. Nevertheless, I am willing to give things a try. Spicy Tuna Sushi was purchased at the local store. I figured I'd have to try it eventually and I might as well get it over with.

I half expected to be nauseated, again, and that [livejournal.com profile] jmaynard would eat it all as he likes tuna. I think he might be part feline. But to my pleasant surprise it was odorless. It was actually edible. The wasabi was to spice things up, but was not needed to drown things out.

Last night [livejournal.com profile] jmaynard and I went to the grocery store for the usual items. We saw, and heard on the sound system, that Hy-Vee had a new item: sushi. I stopped and boggled when I saw it. Sushi is not something I expected to see in Fairmont, let alone in a Fairmont grocery store. I had some reservations about prepackaged sushi, but more curiosity. We bought one package of spicy salmon rolls to try them.

This noon we tried them. Jay thought they were okkay but they really didn't do anything for him. My impression is that the rolls were tolerable sushi but nothing great. Sort of like how a microwave cheeseburger bought at a grocery store compares to a proper, freshly made cheeseburger: It'll do in a pinch, but something is lacking. And it wasn't just that the wasabi seemed to be a bit on the weak side. Also, it was a bit strange to eat sushi with a fork.

So now, at least for a while, there is a local source of sushi that can at least quench the worst of any cravings I might have. It might also be a way for me to try a few specific things from time to time. However, it is not an adequate replacement for going someplace that really does sushi right.

* $WE_TREAT_SMALL_MAMMALS (where [livejournal.com profile] sistaur works) hasn't had to deal with any of the current pet food poisoning cases, but the phone has been ringing off the hook with concerned folks.

* Yes, I do like sushi. Sushi Tango (is that between Sushi Sierra and Sushi Uniform?) is good.

* The chocolate martini is way too good for one's own good. We each had exactly one after sushi.

* Cheapo Discs/Records is a place where much time (and money if one is not careful) be can be spent.

* A Michael Bolton 45: $0.50. A square dance 45: $1.50.

* Indian food is good too. It weirds me out some to see beef dishes on the menu at an Indian restaurant.

* Ax Man Discount is another place where much time (and if not careful, money) can be spent.

* The new series Doctor Who isn't bad as I feared. I'm not completely sure about it, but it seems promising from the two episodes I saw.

* Soy Peppermint Mocha is another drink that is probably too good for my own good.

* Bean Scene's (a local coffee shop) "White Zombie" is also good, but I think the peppermint mocha is what I would be more apt to order again.

Last year as I was working to get my weight down I had a specific craving for a while. It was for fried chicken from KFC. I could have gone to KFC right away as there is a KFC in town. Instead I held off for a couple weeks to see if the craving would go away. It didn't, but I found I could ignore it most of the time and go on. When I finally did go to KFC the result was rather disappointing. I've had no great urge to go to KFC again.

In December [livejournal.com profile] cuttercoon introduced me to proper sushi when I visited Florida. For a couple months I hadn't really thought about it. However in the last few weeks I've had a bit of a craving for sushi. This time the delay isn't about proving to myself that I can make it wait until things are more on my terms, or not fully so. This time it's lack of availability. Sushi means a two hour drive to the Twin Cities, or (and this surprises me some) Sioux Falls. There might be a place in Mankato, only an hour away, but that's in a mall and I'm leery of mall food to start with. I suspect mall sushi is a Really Bad Idea.

I get to Sioux Falls about once a month, and the Twin Cities a few times a year. Another factor is [livejournal.com profile] jmaynard. Often we make the trip together and thus dine together. He does not care for sushi. I figured maybe I could visit [livejournal.com profile] sistaur and we'd go to a good sushi place, but she's just back from Florida and wasn't feeling the best after her last sushi experience, which whether related or not has put her off sushi for a while.

I expect I'll have opportunity sometime, I just don't know when. I just hope I don't have the same experience I did with KFC: being pretty much done with it. I don't expect so. I don't think I have too much to worry about as I think it was deep frying that didn't do anything for me.

It's not at all the same, but [livejournal.com profile] jmaynard and I will be going out for Chinese for lunch. At least it's Oriental.
