A reply to my last entry, after I asked about it through other channels:
krag_carbine: It's more a quizzical curiosity.
I don't think you can get more definitive than the artist's own word on it.
A lot of folks were right, or at least partly right. And evidently I was a fair ways off.
Mixed signals?
16 December 2007 13:03There were several comments on the last post suggesting "curious" which sort of fits.
altivo's comment about it being typical Groat "quizzical" inspired me to go look through the West Corner of the Park archives and see if I could find a similar image. I found many images that seem to confirm
kellogs2066's comment on mouth shape and head angle for that. So curious, at least in the "what, the fuse is lit?!" sense is out.
I found some other images that show the mouth closed, but never in such a smile. It is interesting that I didn't find that particular expression in any of the WCotP cartoons. The signals do seem to be mixed, going by WCotP reference(s).
kellogs2066's comment that the icon seemed to convey something along the lines of "thoughtfulness, contemplativeness and optimism" works with something Jay said last night, that it was sort of a "Hrmm..." Perhaps it's a "Hrmm... that might just work" sort of expression? That sort of fits into
tkwolf's "brain rebooting" comment as well. It's perhaps the look one might have when after trying to solve some problem for some time, one finally manages to look at it a different way and see a possible solution. It also seems to fit into the feeling I had that it was sort of somewhere in a double-take. If you recall the scene in the Pinky and the Brain cartoon When Mice Ruled the Earth where Pinky asked the Brain about the time machine, "Will it also roast marshmallows?" and just as the Brain is about to clobber Pinky, he has a sudden realization and, surprised himself, answers, "Actually, it might." ... well that sort of catching oneself off-guard, but in a good or at least not bad way, might be what the icon conveys.
Keep 'em flyin'
29 August 2007 21:44Another of the new set of icons. This one, I am told, is based on the Boeing P-26C "Peashooter."
About a year ago I made up a list of icon ideas. Some were things I figured I would have an occasional use for and some where things that just seemed like they'd be neat to have around. Some of them I had at least some idea what they should look like and some I had no clue what they should look like.
I gave that list, along with some money, to Jim Groat and now I have five new icons. Four of them were on my list. One was not, but then I hardly consider the list to be complete or to be worked with exclusively. The image that was not on the list, is the one I am using for this post. If you don't recognize the look, you haven't had much exposure to the movie 300. I'm not sure how I'll use this icon, but I have it for whenever it might be of use.
A while back I took the "What Chess Piece Are You?" test and posted the result, black knight. Now
kinkyturtle has made an icon showing me in that form. This seems an appropriate icon to use for the various quizzes like the inspiration for this icon.
Thanks to
kiwihunter8 there are a couple new Orvan icons. The icon for this post is a badge scan. This badge will be seen, at least some of the time, at MFF. Another is a larger version of just the 'photo' in the badge. That replaces the previous Orvan icon. The older icon is still around, but the 'photo' is the "default Orvan" now.
Iconic ponderings
28 September 2006 16:20I've been pondering additional LJ icons for some time and have been slowly expanding the set with the help of a few folks. Recently I looked over my collection and when I went to make a minor edit, found this line: Currently uploaded: 31 out of 134. It seems I have plenty of space to use.
( Some ramblings and a sketchy list. )
The Amana Colonies Renaissance Faire has that as a tagline on the bottom of the web page. That line also appears on the back of the ACRF shirts. Some folks expressed an interest in having that line as an LJ icon and at Nodaway the ACRF organizer said he didn't mind that. So I've gone and made up a few LJ icons that are really just text. I've used the same typeface as was used on the shirts, Tarantis.
( Images inside. )
Too Darn Hot.
30 July 2006 19:33As you can see from the icon, by
kinkyturtle, it was too darn hot today.
I really am using an animated icon. Normally I find such annoying and distracting, but last night I happened across a radar sweep icon that was almost right (its sweep was way too fast) and mentioned it. After having a look at it,
kinkyturtle said he could not only do a radar sweep icon at a better speed, but give it that distinctive look that tells you who you are reading. And now I have this nifty animated radar sweep icon. I expect I'll be using it for any weather related posts that don't have more specific icons.
Thanks
kinkyturtle!
A few new icons
17 June 2006 21:35I've finally gotten good scanning software installed and can get good looking scans once again. I've scanned a few images drawn by Jim Groat at RCFM and did some minor image editing on a couple of them. These were all made with them being LJ icons in mind. One accompanies this post. It did rain today, though I slept through the heaviest of it.
Beyond grumpy
10 June 2006 22:50Actually, I'm not feeling like this at all at the moment. Thanks for the icon,
kinkyturtle.
A new icon from
verypinkygirl. Hopefully I'll have plenty reason to use it. Thank you,
verypinkygirl!
Rather than do nothing or just wait, I decided to Do Something about at least one icon. As I'm no artist, I looked through images to see what could be adapted. This one looked promising for the phone icon, and so was used. A bit of image editing and part of one panel has become the accompanying icon. I don't know if this is the final version, as I am certainly open to improvement or replacement, but at least I have something for now.
[ADDENDUM: And thanks again to
kinkyturtle who not only drew the original but cleaned up (or replaced? not sure) the version I had to something that looks better.]
[FURTHER ADDENDUM: Original icon has been replaced with another, made by
krag_carbine.]
I have a lot of unused LJ icon space and have been pondering some additional icons that would be nice to have available. So far I've really only identified a few possibilities and not really filled them out. Nor have I decided how I'm going to get these made once I do settle on just what they ought to look like. The common element would be the image of Vakko (it does feel weird to put it that way as I type) so that the icon doesn't leave anyone guessing who wrote the LJ post that it accompanies. While I like the centaur form, some might be better with the biped form.
- Telephone - Either a cellular with an image of Vakko on its screen or Vakko using an older style telephone.
- Car - Vakko driving an old style touring car, perhaps?
- Credit Card - The Acme card, something like American Express, but with another character in place of the centurion.
- Money/Finance - No good ideas yet.
- Tired/Sleepy - No good ideas yet.
- Snow/Winter -
No good ideas yet. - Rain -
No good ideas yet. - Wind -
No good ideas yet. - Sun/nice weather -
No good ideas yet. - Heat (excess) -
No good ideas yet.
For snow and rain, there would be some wind as well. Very seldom do I experience precipitation coming straight down. Wind would not be a mild breeze, but a strong wind.
Have I missed anything? Any suggestion(s) for any these? Or who to see about getting one or another made?
