Iconic ponderings

I've been pondering additional LJ icons for some time and have been slowly expanding the set with the help of a few folks. Recently I looked over my collection and when I went to make a minor edit, found this line: Currently uploaded: 31 out of 134. It seems I have plenty of space to use.

Going over some old posts and some notes and looking through my tag (keyword) list, I came up a bunch of possible subjects. And then a few more things that just sort of appeared without any particular use in mind just yet. I have some ideas of how some should look, but not all. Nor am I certain that what I am currently imagining for those would be the best images.

I'd prefer to have the image of Vakko(taur) appear in the icons so it's obvious who is doing the posting. That complicates the next bit though. Who all would it be best to go to for some of these? While kinkyturtle does draw the character (and Warners in general) well, he has already made the majority of the icons I have and I feel funny asking him for more. He's got a bunch of other artwork he could be doing, such as the various cartoon diaries.

Jim Groat, krag_carbine will be at MFF and I do have a few icons from him. His rate is quite reasonable, so I don't mind getting a few more from him though I would ask that he rotate the paper he uses 90 degrees. If an icon is to be rectangular, it makes sense for the long side to be horizontal where a centaur is involved. That also reminds me that I should print out some images, preferably in color, that can be used for reference. I'll need to have things ready as I think I'd need to see him as soon as possible at MFF before he gets too big a queue - or too big a gathering of folks listening to his stories making it difficult to get close and say much.

So now I'm pondering a few things. If all of these should be done (it's not like I'll run out of space for them anytime soon), what they should be, and who all I should see about getting them made. Or, for that matter, if there are some folks I should approach and let them pretty much come up with something without much input from me. That seems to be what happened with the one icon by evol and the result was quite good.

• aviation - Flying a biplane? Winged centaur? [Aviation icon by krag_carbine]


• birthday - Presenting/show off a cake [Obtained at MFF 2006]


• book, reading - Reading a book


• camera? - Not sure what the image should be. (Possible replacement.)


• candyman/flashy? - Brightly colored clothes & such?


• cellphone - Image on a phone's LCD


• chess piece - Similar to the image in this post. [kinkyturtle made the chess piece icon.]


• credit card - ACME card. Like American Express, but instead of the Centurion...


• drink - NOT drunk. [red wine icon by krag_carbine]


• gookie - Like Wakko's gookie.


• flying saucer? - Vakkotaur being beamed up (or tractor beamed) by a saucer?


• freedom/liberty - Something founders or Constitution related, but what?


• holidays (Halloween, Christmas [Santaur claus? taur ornament? light??], others?)


• illness - Thermometer? (Oral, so no goofy ideas.)


• mad science - Boris Karloff style electrics? Glassware? [mad science icon by krag_carbine]


• medical - Fluoroscope x-ray? "Taur"adol (not toradol) with warnings of transmogrifying (side) effects?


• money/finance - Coin & paper bill images are obvious, but might not be best. Consider the requirement for appearing on money.


• movies - Similar to the Wakko-as-projector bit? (need a picture of that)


• music - Record label? Listening to horn Victrola, notes floating about? Old radio? [film2edit made the Victrola music icon]


• outline - Vakko as line art (white on black? edge? Maybe in the style of this picture though perhaps at a different angle or pose.


• politics - 'Vote Centaur' campaign button?


• psychedelic - ?


• red tape / bureaucracy - Tangled in red tape.


• repair - Digging through some device, parts flying (like the "please stand by" cards).


• sick - not so much illness, as queasy. "I think I'm gonna be sick." Green tint?


• silhouette - Sure, but what angle?


• superhero-oid? - How would this work?


• telephone - Talking on a candlestick phone? Or OLD wall-mount? Saddlebagphone? (Yes, this might be a replacement.) [Current telephone icon by krag_carbine but is a set of bells missing?]


• time - clock/watch (Possible replacement.)


• tired/sleep - Yawning? Candle & nightcap?


• tube - Vakko-head as logo on glass envelope of a 12AX7 or similar. Or a 6146? Some work on this is proceeding.


• writing - Writing at a stand-up desk (candle & quill?)

Orvan - some more Orvan icons, though I'm not sure just what they should be yet.

And with all that, I still have the feeling I'm overlooking something. Probably several somethings. But it's not as if I didn't have a quite a list already.
