Last night [livejournal.com profile] jmaynard and I went to the grocery store for the usual items. We saw, and heard on the sound system, that Hy-Vee had a new item: sushi. I stopped and boggled when I saw it. Sushi is not something I expected to see in Fairmont, let alone in a Fairmont grocery store. I had some reservations about prepackaged sushi, but more curiosity. We bought one package of spicy salmon rolls to try them.

This noon we tried them. Jay thought they were okkay but they really didn't do anything for him. My impression is that the rolls were tolerable sushi but nothing great. Sort of like how a microwave cheeseburger bought at a grocery store compares to a proper, freshly made cheeseburger: It'll do in a pinch, but something is lacking. And it wasn't just that the wasabi seemed to be a bit on the weak side. Also, it was a bit strange to eat sushi with a fork.

So now, at least for a while, there is a local source of sushi that can at least quench the worst of any cravings I might have. It might also be a way for me to try a few specific things from time to time. However, it is not an adequate replacement for going someplace that really does sushi right.

The problem with supermarket sushi is that it's pre-packaged and stuffed full of preservatives, and the rice always tastes nasty. I think there's a completely different recipe for the pre-packed stuff.

Agreed! The 7-11 and Albertson's sushi rolls are always soggy-tasting, like thawed microwave burritos. Yech!

If you or Yakko make FC this year, we must go to the sushi place near the Doubletree. It is chez yum.

I worked in Pittsburgh for a decade, so I know most of the local restaurants. :) Sushi Kim sushi is quite good, Original Fish Market isn't bad but not quite as good. I'm also rather fond of Koto Buki, which is about a mile walk from the hotel.

The ultimate Pittsburgh local treat is the Primanti's sandwich: your choice of meat, cheese, tomatoes, sweet-and-sour cole slaw, and French fries on Italian bread. I usually add hot sauce and onions. I call it blue collar sushi. :9

Ooj! The Primanti's sushi sandwich sounds good. Must try at AC if the opportunity presents itself.

No!!!! Not sushi premade!! It can't be.... *breaks down and starts crying*

Sorry, I'm better now. But how in the world do you eat premade sushi? Yicky. I love my fresh sushi.

With a fork. =<:o)

It was quite plain that fresh was much better. As for how? Well, since this was the first time there was a certain novelty factor. Also note that this is a local source. To get proper fresh sushi means traveling at least two hours to get it, with another two hours back. Fairmont is a small town in the middle of nowhere.

On the whole, I do agree. I avoid the microwave cheeseburgers I cited as a comparison as they're nasty shadows of what a cheeseburger really should be. However, I can get a proper cheeseburger locally should ever I desire one.

OOoo, Thought. I'll bring some good Sushi to RCFM. I'll get the rolls the night before leaving. I'll purchase a few of the smaller ones and then stick them in the freezer over night. You coming Thursday to RCFM?

Alright then. I'll buy some good sushi, freeze it the night before and then bring it to RCFM.... I hope it stays alright. It might not though.

You could do a trial run and get some sushi for yourself earlier and freeze just a bit of it and see how well it works. I think Nova (not on LJ that I know of) knows of a good sushi place in Huntsville so the freezing bit might not be necessary at all.
