A while back I posted on
yakko's console scribble a musing about teleportation:
The first practical matter transmitter will be no grand thing for exploring the cosmos nor for sending relief to disaster stricken areas. The first workable matter transmitter will be developed by geeks so they may have their pizza in a more timely manner.
I have changed my mind. The above is wrong. The first working matter transmitter will instead be made by
bronxelf_ag001 so that she can fax someone a bomb.
By now
kinkyturtle should be well underway, travelling to Lawrence, KS today, and from there to Fairmont, MN tomorrow as he mentions here. Jay and I looking forward to his visit. We have a couple things roughly planned, showing KT around the extended area and such. Stuff that there isn't time for in shorter visits, or those with more people, like the Taurmanias of a few years back.
Jay and I are already curious as to how things will appear in KT's cartoon diary about the trip. Hopefully there'll be enough free time for his sketching so that the days leading to MFF will be ready for scanning and uploading soon after KT returns home. That way all those at MFF won't be muttering about not getting to the bits they were at, or wanted to be at. Time will tell. And eventually KT will tell as well.
Also, I've been using the impending visit as a reason to get the house in order, though it might well be just so I feel better about things. The place looks better than it did not all that long ago, and I do feel better. Whether that's from things looking better, the effort expended to get things looking better, or something else I'm not sure. I just like the results, whatever the reason.
Yes, the post about the whole point of the trip. Also the post about about the high point of the trip. This is just one (or maybe two) person's perspective. As those reading
bronxelf_ag001's account know, there was much going on and Jay and I couldn't see everything. In at least one case, that was probably just as well...
And no, I don't mean the old radio show.
A few years ago I encountered the one and only
bronxelf_ag001 and must have made a decent impression. Yesterday, to my surprise, I received an invitation to her wedding. Considering her "short list" is really short (single digits, it seems) I was rather boggled for a while. After all, I was someone she met under decidedly non-ideal conditions, for a few days on and off, a few years ago.
But she also made quite an impression. Those who have actually met Bronxelf and not just said hi & bye, know this is inevitable. An impression big enough to actually get me to consider going. Yes, to New York City. Yes, to the Bronx. Yes, for a wedding. Normally I tend to avoid weddings on principle of maintaining comfort... and my views on cities are fairly well known. That they are much like ionizing radiation: Can be useful in small doses, but prolonged or intense exposure is unhealthy.
Not that I expected to never set foot in NYC, but I expected it'd be something planned in a cooler season and probably to see
michaelmink. And not the weekend after AnthroCon. Anyway, after a bit of checking this and that, I've decided to go. And hopefully
jmaynard will be able as well to act as guide some of the time.
So, plane tickets have been purchased. A hotel room has been reserved. RSVP has been sent. And I am questioning my sanity.
