Yesterday [livejournal.com profile] jmaynard and I drove up to Minneapolis to visit [livejournal.com profile] sistaur. Visit we did, and also had a nice lunch at Lindey's. After lunch we looked for a CD of music by Franz von Suppe, which was found with surprising ease, and also for Sioux City Birch Beer which was not found at all. We did find Faygo 'Rock and Rye' and some Creme Brulée soda which I bought just to see how they are.

Faygo's 'Rock and Rye' is a cream soda with some other flavor added, but it's not obvious just what that flavor is. The Creme Brulée soda really does taste like Creme Brulée.

Today I drove down to Armstrong, Iowa in search of birch beer. The clerk at a small store there said they had the other Sioux City products, but no longer carried birch beer as sales were slow. She also said that I wouldn't find it anywhere in Armstrong. Estherville, IA wasn't all that far away and is a larger town so I drove there. I found a ginger ale I'd not encountered before at a Pamida, and also some maple and even some caramel Nut Goodies, but no birch beer. Someone suggested I ask at the Hy-Vee liquor store, even though birch beer is not alcoholic, in the same strip mall. No luck there, either, either finding or being directed to birch beer. At the ALCO I once more didn't find it, but on my way out I was told that it could be found at the Hy-Vee... in Ames.

Ames is too far to go just for that, but Ames is also on my way to Kansas City, so a stop off there won't be a problem. Hopefully the information is still valid and I'll have some birch beer to take to RCFM.

One of the roommates I'll have at RCFM is from outside North America and his flight, as well as the time zone change, will likely have him rather tired. He requested the highly caffeinated drinks Bawls and Jolt since they are available. The problem was that I hadn't seen such around.

On my way back from Detroit whenever I stopped for water (what I generally drink) or gasoline, I'd look around and see the convenience store had. I did the same yesterday on my way up to Minneapolis to pick up [livejournal.com profile] jmaynard. I found both Jolt and Bawls at SuperAmerica stations and now should have a sufficient supply. I don't usually stop at SuperAmerica stations as the one in Fairmont is usually selling gasoline at a price higher than everyone else. Or it was until recently. Fuel prices are now high enough that evidently people must be looking around and the SuperAmerica folks figure they can't get away with charging more even if they are the most obvious place near the Interstate.

What they did not have was Sioux City birch beer (it's like root beer, but with a more wintergreen flavor). I want to find more of that, but haven't seen any except in Charles City, IA which is rather inconveniently located. I hope (and expect) there's some to be found in the Twin Cities, but I don't want to end up running all over the Cities to find the stuff.
