Corelle dishes are pretty tough things as dishes go, but they are not quite truly unbreakable. Tonight I managed to shatter a Corelle plate and it was rather unexpectedly spectacular (and annoying). At least it will be easy to replace. Plain white is practical as I don't need to match some 'retired' pattern.

I think Ive mentioned to you my hatred of Corelle.

Youve just experienced why. You'll be pulling that glass out of shit for days.

I had heard, though not the reason. I had thought it was a matter of the patterns and such. I'm not sure that any other choice would be any better for me/us. Everything breaks and I do prefer stuff that at least breaks rarely. And I can easily replace it (locally even, even in Fairmont), and get it in a nice plain white.

I have a particular hatred for that babyshit brown and white pattern. the others are unremarkable.

I just hate the product in general. when they shatter the shards go everywhere, in teeny pieces.

Corelle gets more shatter-prone as it ages, too. After we shattered two at once a few months ago we were still finding shards for over a week. That inspired us to give all of our Corelle ware away.

Stresses do accumulate. I am curious, what replaced or displaced it?

Just some ordinary ceramic dinner plates from Wegmans'. Yes, they break. But they don't leave as many needle-like shards.

Hopefully you were NOT finding those shards the way I've been finding shards of the last thing I broke months ago: with my bare feet.

That thing that shattered certainly wasn't a Corelle, though, and I've dropped mine several times with no noticeable effect. I'm sure my luck will run out; they're tough, but not indestructible. ;o)

One or two of them I found with my bare feet, but fortunately only with a touch, not by grinding them in. :-)

As I said, Corelle's chance to splinter increases with age. Our plates were over 30 years old. YMMV.

I'll vouch for the durability of Corelle. I bought a set in 1994 when I got my first apartment, and still have everything. (One bowl has a chip in it, but everything else is good as new.)

I'll also vouch for the utility of all-white wares. My additional Corelle bowls are just plain white.
