[livejournal.com profile] bronxelf_ag001's recent post reminded of this story. If it's not true, it's still a good tale and a good example....

The refinery had stopped. It hadn't been shut down. It just quit working. Workers went nuts looking for whatever did it. When petroleum doesn't flow, money isn't being made. As time passes the pressure on everyone goes up. Finally it's agreed that outside help wouldn't hurt. They call a guy out of retirement who has seen about everything a refinery can do.

When he shows up, he seems like an idiot. He asks "obvious" questions (What's that pipe, where's it go.. what's this valve do...) This goes on all morning.. people are getting more and more anxious. Time and money and such...

Finally, he walks over and points, "That valve is stuck." Denial. It can't be that valve. He picks up a hammer and hits the thing. Something happens. A radio call asks what'd they do - it's all starting to work again.

The guy writes out his bill: $15,000. The head honcho balks at this and demands an itemized bill. The retiree agrees and writes out an itemized bill:

Tap with hammer.................................$0.20 - waived.
Knowing where to tap hammer...$15,000.00

One day as the Little Red Hen was scratching in a field, she found some grains of wheat.

"This wheat should be planted," she said. "Who will plant this wheat?"

"Not I," said the Duck.
"Not I," said the Cat.
"Not I," said the Dog.

"Then I will," said the Little Red Hen. And she did.

Soon the wheat grew to be tall and yellow.

"The wheat is ripe," said the Little Red Hen. "Who will cut the wheat?"

"Not I," said the Duck.
"Not I," said the Cat.
"Not I," said the Dog.

"Then I will," said the Little Red Hen. And she did.

When the wheat was cut, the Little Red Hen said, "Who will thresh the wheat?"

"Not I," said the Duck.
"Not I," said the Cat.
"Not I," said the Dog.

"Then I will," said the Little Red Hen. And she did.

When the wheat was threshed, the Little Red Hen said, "Who will take this wheat to the mill?"

"Not I," said the Duck.
"Not I," said the Cat.
"Not I," said the Dog.

"Then I will," said the Little Red Hen. And she did.

She took the wheat to the mill and had it ground into flour. Then she said, "Who will make this flour into bread?"

"Not I," said the Duck.
"Not I," said the Cat.
"Not I," said the Dog.

"Then I will," said the Little Red Hen. And she did.

She made and baked the bread. Then she said, "Who will eat this bread?"

"Oh! I will," said the Duck.
"And I will," said the Cat.
"And I will," said the Dog.

"No, No!" said the Little Red Hen. "I will do that."

"This is goes against interspecies law!" cried the Duck.
"We must look forward rather than backward!" cried the Cat.
"We must all work together and not be punitive!" cried the Dog.
