vakkotaur: Centaur holding bow - cartoon (happy)

[livejournal.com profile] jmaynard and I visited my folks at Thanksgiving and we took care of at least some of Christmas then. [livejournal.com profile] sistaur was going to visit my folks at Christmas, while Jay and I were in Texas, but between weather and illness that didn't work out. We were all going to get together on Easter but scheduling, illness, and weather made that another no-go. So it was yesterday that we finally all met at [livejournal.com profile] sistaur's place for a late Easter and the last bit of Christmas. It all seemed to work out rather well.

Those who were still getting presents seemed to be quite appreciative of them which was good. The meal was good. And it's the first time we've all met together in considerable time. With that, and a couple visits to some stores looking for a few things (not holiday related) Saturday was a rather long but very good day.

The travelling was nicely uneventful, and the family gathering was pretty much what I'd expected. It was amusing to see Jay's reaction to a real Winter cold snap. Well, it amused those who saw it and who were not Jay. The meal(s) were all quite good. The homemade cole slaw was really good. It makes one realize how lacking the stuff one gets in restaurants is.

Pa's computer and the Knoppix CD evidently did not get along, which was rather disappointing. However the other CD with the various Windows cleaning tools turned out to be effective and with it Jay got rid of a big nuisance, and probably a few smaller ones. After a couple tries, I managed to get the needed printer driver installed and now Pa can use the desktop machine for what the (now defunct) laptop been used for. Also, Firefox was installed so hopefully a reinfection will not be as likely.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the presents they got. Well, maybe I came across otherwise with regards to one item. I'm not that good at faking appreciation when I get something I don't see the point of right off. Once home, I looked through the manual some and I'll likely try the gadget later this week. I also need to find a spot to put one rather delicate item. Looking around for an obvious good place for it, I discovered there wasn't one. At least not yet.

A recent post, protected so I won't bother linking to it, brought up a bit of how people treat anniversaries and holidays differently. I find I tend to recognize them, but I'm not too big on holding to exact dates for things. I think that came about from sharing, or perhaps not sharing, a birthday.

My sister and I have the same birthday, separated by five years. This wasn't planned, so we have been told. She claims, or at least once claimed, that somehow I had stolen her birthday. She is five years younger than I am, so I don't see how that could be.

The result was that when we were kids there had to be two cakes, at least. Generally what would happen is that we'd each have a cake on a weekend, and it would two different weekends. I forget how gifts were handled, but what I think happened was that we'd each get something on each weekend, probably by visiting different sets grandparents on each weekend.

The result of this is that I don't consider the exact date of my birthday to be important. I had to explain that once when someone sent me something and it didn't arrive on or before that date. The sender seemed to feel bad about it, but it simply wasn't important. That the sender thought to send at all, that was important. Even that wasn't necessary. It was just nice.

If I do remember a birthday - other than my sister's - it isn't because I really remembered it, it's because I looked at the calendar in the office. I made notes of folk's birthdays and wrote them down and now mark up the calendar before putting it up. Sometimes I still miss things. Nothing's perfect.

Last year Jay and I visited my folks for Thanksgiving and his folks for Christmas. My folks and my sister and I simply moved Christmas to Thanksgiving and that was pretty much that, no big deal. In fact, I rather liked that - it got things out of the way and I got (most of) my Christmas shopping done before the wretched "Christmas shopping season" which I find to be overcrowded and far too loud. It was amusing hearing the news reports on how the shopping was and such and not caring one little bit as it had been taken care of already.

The trip to Houston for Christmas week went fairly well. [livejournal.com profile] jmaynard summed it up here.

Didn't do anything special for New Year's Eve. Nothing unusual there. If anything, I'd stay up till the year changed and then get some sleep. Spending the later evening at home keeps the probability of dealing with those who drink to excess down.

New Year's Day wasn't bad. I finally installed the DVD-reader/CD-RW drive that Jay gave me for Christmas. Now I can read CDs again. And DVDs. And even make use of the CD-RW discs my folks gave me last Christmas. I think I'll be doing some sorting and backing up this weekend.

Also, I took a small (60mm aperture) telescope out last night and looked at Saturn for a few minutes. Such a small 'scope only just barely shows the rings, but they could be seen.
