I remember a lab session from an organic chemistry class where butanol was used. The smell was recognized immediately: markers! So that's what the marker solvent was, butanol. Butanol, like the other alcohols, is a liquid but evaporates easily under conditions people consider comfortable.
As LibertyCon is fast approaching and Orvan will be delivering a few things there, I have a bunch of boxes to mark up with the name ACME. I've done that to a few boxes and they're at the top of the stairs. The strongest marker smell, however, is at the bottom of the stairs. Butanol is heavier than air and so the vapor flows down the stairs... and seems to build up and hang there.
