Possibly not an actually missing genre, just one with a name I don't happen to know. I find I like the style, the neat use of voice(s), of "gospel music." I just don't care much for the lyrics themselves. Does this style of singing show up in music that isn't religious?

If it's what I'm thinking of, I've heard it not religious a few times. The first is the song "Underground" by David Bowie in Labyrinth. The second was a commercial on TLC for a "Junkyard Wars" special. It was very fun, just like the show it was advertising for. The third was a live version of U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For". I suppose the first and third could, due to the words, be interpreted as religious, and both are gospel-style backups of a popular artist. The second, however, was definitely secular and definitely a choir being led by a traditional caller.

A lot of the vocal sound track of Disney's Hercules is gospel-like (though certainly without the usual message). But that's not an artist or the like that you can rely on or easily find similar genre stuff.
