Campaign of Hate and Fear is an opinion piece by Democrat Orson Scott Card, duplicated here in case there are any problems with reading the first link.

I don't much care what Card has or has not published in the way of books. I am, however, impressed by what he puts forward in that piece. Perhaps some folks would benefit from reading and thinking about things, and perhaps eventually even comprehending them, rather than engaging in childish name-calling and googlebombing.

It's never good when politicians--on both sides, as it's been this time as usual--politicize war.

And Card, as much as he calls himself a Democrat, is politicizing things in favor of the Republicans. As much as he tries to be intelligent about things, he still resorts to childish oversimplifying, himself, while describing people like Howard Dean and what they represent. That doesn't do any more good than what the more childish Democrats are doing.

After listening to Mr. Dean on the radio this noon (a rebroadcast of his "foreign policy" speech of yesterday) and hearing so many mis-characterizations and just plain misses, it left me wondering about him. He does a very good job of trying sound like enlightened reason, but manages to get it wrong. I suppose he has to for his purposes, but the delivery left me wondering: Does he really believe what he is saying, or does he just hope others do? Either way is scary and it sure looks like Mr. Card's analysis is, if not absolutely correct, very close to the mark.

That's funny, because I heard the same speech and felt he was often right on target. He "gets it wrong" only based on your opinion, and as such, Card's analysis is similarly "correct" based on your opinion. To someone who agrees with Dean and sees why, it sounds like some of the same childish distortion that you object to from your side of the table.

He certainly does get a thing right here and there. Nobody is wrong - or right - all the time. But he had more misses than hits. If he does manage to become president, I hope he gets an education about a few things before they blow up in all our faces.

Well, my point was, whether or not you agree with what he's saying, it's hypocritical to complain about "childish behavior" on one side and then defend it on your own. And his trivializations of Dean's positions to me seem pretty childish..

What I found refreshing was that someone who isn't from the right (and therefore automatically dismissable by many) is pointing out a few things. He might not be the most tactful, but at last someone is finally pointing out a few things. I expect the lack of tact is a manifestation of frustration. He'd like to vote for someone for other than Bush, which is understandable, but keeps finding the alternatives - to his astonishment - not even that good. Of course, he could just be a jerk, too. But there is that saying about even blind squirrels occasionally finding nuts.

There are people on the right that've pointed out things about Bush, too, that I rather enjoyed. I wish more of them would do so.
