With cities?

This Summer a new term has come up to describe some people, metrosexual. The implication of the name is interesting. Metrosexual suggests a sexual attraction to a metropolitan area. Supposedly there are quite a few metrosexuals. I had figured a person had to be mayor or a sports team owner to screw a whole city at once.

A metrosexual is supposedly a sensitive but heterosexual guy, right? What amuses me abotu this term is that while we take metro- to refer to the "metropolitan area of a city," what it actually means historically is "mother." Ahah, just as I suspected, guys who are ardently anti-macho and into all that girly stuff aren't really sensitive, they're just hot for their mothers.

And if you're wondering how "mother" got involved in "metropolis," it's because the word was originally used to mean the "mother city" of a colony, e.g. Corcyra was founded by settlers from Corinth- Corcyra is a Corinthian colony, and Corinth is the metropolis of Corcyra. (Of course Corcyra was itself the metropolis of Epidamnus. See Thucydides for more info ;) )

That, in a way, makes it even funnier still. Somehow I can't picture a 'metrosexual' as a 'mofo'.

Alas, I live in Atlanta, and the city knows it will never hold a candle. Atlanta doesn't make love to me. It has lots of abusive, angry sex with me, though. :(
