vakkotaur: Centaur holding bow - cartoon (telephone)

I think I've downloaded the various Android applications that I need or want to my phone. I have:

* TweetDeck (I want it on Linux now!)
* Weight Chart
* GPSpeedo (speedometer)
* Droid48 (HP48)
* ES File Explorer
* Opera Mobile
* Meebo IM
* Periodic Table
* AndroidVNC (now if I can just get VNC working on belgian...)
* ConnectBot (ssh)
* AndFTP
* Yaaic (IRC)
* Google Goggles (Yet to have it be useful, really)
* Google Sky
* Note Everything
* As well as all the stock AT&T/HTC Inspire 4G stuff

It's always possible that I am overlooking something. Thus I now ask what applications you find useful or recommend. I do have two, well three limitations:

1. NO GAMES. I am simply Not Interested. No, I don't care how great anyone thinks Angry Birds or its successor is. Not Interested.

2. I'm a cheap bas- er, I am rather frugal and so free wins every time. "Free" demo or trial period does not.

3. My phone is not 'rooted' and while having more access/control would be nice, I have no great desire to fiddle with ROM sets and such.

And as if you didn't know, I run Linux so have no great need of things to match up with Microsoft stuff.

That out of the way, any suggestions?

EStrongs also has their Task Manager, which I've made use of since I had the G1. Helps greatly to keep those over 9000 things the phone thinks should be running but which you aren't using and can't remove from running ALL the time. And lawd yes, I LOVE the file explorer.

WildArt Gdocs. Mega-handy, though I do wish they'd fix it so you can get to your sharing options from the phone. If nothing else, you CAN edit and create documents, upload/download/remote view them as well.

AVG Antivirus Free is handy.

I also make extensive use of AK Notepad.

Happydroid Bookmark Sort & Backup is useful if you do a lot of surfing and bookmark things for later when you're at home.

There USED to be AdBlock Plus. I had it on the G1 and either they don't offer it for the newer OS or it vanished, but damn I want that back. The only ones that come up in the Market now require rooting or the reviews say it doesn't work. Sadness.

Pretty much everything else I have is either Solitaire or various other time-wasters or things you're not looking for. Hope this list helps, though!

Thanks. I managed to overlook the Task Manager. Now I see I need to track down what a bunch of things are and if I really need or want them running or not.

I forgot to list Note Everything, a simple (well, I use it simply anyway) notepad thing.

Not sure I'd have much use for Gdoc - Google Documents kinda bothers me as I have this fondness for truly local control. I do have Opera set to sync. up by itself, so I think the bookmark issue is taken care of - and I can also force the issue if I need to.

Wow. What a totally different group than I have! I have two games (Alchemy and Fishing), I have Olive Office (Microsoft office clone), Colornotes (recommended for fast jotting down of things) -- need but haven't got a calendar that synchs with everything so I can carry my calendar on the go. There's probably one and it probably costs.

I have two sketchbook applications, the Entrepreneur magazine (because I'm now administering a business website), and several News sites (including one in Spanish) along with Yahoo mail and Gmail and Spamcop mail.

Thanks for the list. Yes, it is rather different and I'm not sure I'd have any overlap, but it is nice to know what is seen as useful by others, especially with so much stuff available.

You can get tweetdeck on linux. I run it on mine.

You might consider Plume for your phone instead for twitter. I like it a lot better than tweetdeck for android.

I use gReader for my RSS feeds.

I've seen that, but it means installing Adobe AIR and I'm rather leery of Adobe products. As for Plume, can the transparency be turned off? The web site says "beautiful" but to me it's unreadably ugly with that.

By default I believe it's off. Mine has certainly not been transparent.
