Fill in the blank:

_____ and tonic.

The reason I ask will be revealed later.

Gin came to mind first. Cheep gin tastes TERRIBLE. And it should have lemon.

Not lime? I'd always seen a slice of lime as the default garnish(?) for a gin and tonic.

Leave it to the bartender to specify which gin. I'll have to remember that.

Vodka, Scotch, or Irish whiskey.

I can't stand the taste of pine needles and ass, so no gin.

Gin is the first thing that popped into my head, even though I'm not sure even what tonic is.

Gin popped into my mind first, too. Tonic is the stuff the barber put on my hair when he combed it after cutting it.

Tonic water. Water with quinine and nowadays, a sweetener. It was originally a means of quinine delivery as an anti-malarial. However, quinine is quite bitter and the Brits added gin to deal with that. Probably a decidedly non-trivial amount of gin. What is currently sold as tonic water does have quinine, but the amount is too low to be therapeutically useful as an antimalarial. It's just for flavor, such as it is.
