Occasionally I see a journal post appended, and the addition starts with ETA. The first time it was quite jarring. I had only seen or heard ETA as or for "Estimated Time of Arrival" and this was new thing that I eventually discovered was meant as "Edited To Add." What, ADDENDUM is too big and fancy a word?

1) Some people like acronyms.
2) ETA is significantly shorter and faster to type than "addendum".

Most of the people on my Friends list simply say "EDIT" instead of either ETA or ADDENDUM. So do I, on the rare occasions when I mark an edit. I only do so if I've added new content; most of my editorial changes are grammatical or stylistic.

I just use "UPDATE".

ETA would make me think "Estimated Time of Arrival", too... or maybe the old name for the Japanese equivalent of the "untouchable" caste, those who handled the dead or animal hides.

Their descendants today are called the "burakumin". I had to laugh when I read a book titled Japan Today... it was a very good book, but was written in the days before disco, and translated "burakumin" as "village people."

For your average web user, I'm afraid so.

Or maybe it means... your LJ friends are Basque separatists!

I'm glad all my LJ friends are smart, I have yet to see that acronym used in that way.
