In the last poll I had a question about apple pie and what might accompany it. I listed "nothing else" "cheese" "ice cream" "diesel" (the silly choice) and "other."

One person selected everything, and was the only one so far to include the diesel. But a couple other selected "other" and now I'm curious. What else, besides ice cream and cheese, do folks put on or have with apple pie?

I've seen, including what you have already:

(1) Ice cream (most common)
(2) Cheese (a regional thing, I think)
(3) Whipped cream
(4) Grated cinnamon (New England thing)
(5) Caramel sauce (fancy outfits)

Okkay, I guess I can see all of those and am a bit surprised I hadn't seen or thought of the caramel. Cinnamon I sort of figured to be baked into the pie itself or at least the top crust. I've heard of cheese with apple pie bit but don't recall ever having it and find the idea a bit strange - and I grew up in Wisconsin...

But the idea of whipped cream on apple pie seems really odd to me. On pumpkin or chocolate pie, sure. Apple? I suppose it works well enough, it just seems so very odd.

well duh lol
Whipped cream, whipped topping, caramel sauce (preferably followed by whipped cream or topping lol), mmm
sometimes with a bit of cinnamon or nutmeg sprinkled on top of the whipped toppings... mmm
also on occasion a bit of heavy cream, not whipped just poured over the top of a warm slice of apple pie... mmm

does that help at all?

The Brits would probably just smother it in custard.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Custard mentions our crimes against food on that front.

As crimes against food go, that's a pretty mild one I'd say. And I so seldom use custard that the box of custard mix an Australian friend sent me is apt to last me several years, assuming it can stand to be stored so long.
