I'm not doing the Friday Five thing, but all the posts of it did remind me a quip I overheard at Rosenthorne. One fellow was asked if his hair was naturally wavy or curly or if he had a "permanent." Evidently he asked if the gal asking did and she said yes. He replied, "No, you have a temporary. I have a permanent." This struck me as being a good answer that points out how a common term is, really, not correct. Also it is an answer I mean to use myself when the need occurs.

Well, technically, "Permanent" is short for "permanent wave", and if done properly, that's exactly what it is.

The part of the hair that you treat is permanently waved. It's just that the part still growing out of your head isn't, so the wavy bit just gets further and further from your head, and eventually gets cut off or breaks.

There are a few rare heads of hair that refuse to hold a permanent. My hairdresser has given up on mine.

well in your case...
