Amazing how most regional dialects of words are commonplace and acceptable but nucular is somehow perceived as an indication of idiocy.

Other mispronounciations (*several* mispronounciations) are being let slid (as well as split infinitives apparently ;) ) but, yes, this one sticks in craws.

Besides, I don't think "nucular" is a regional dialect (it's widespread, as Palin (from Alaska), Eisenhower and Bush (from Texas), Clinton (from the south), Carter (from the deep south), and Mondale (from Minnesota), all places with different regional dialects, all say "nucular".

Dialects are regional, idiocy is universal.

Don't forget that Carter holds a degree in nuclear engineering from the US Naval Academy...

I suspect, though, that the idea of idiocy came first and when a person says "nucular" then a bunch of folks figuratively jump up and, pointing, say, "See?!"

As for split infinitives, that's an issue in Latin. English is not Latin, the infinitives can be split without destroying meaning. In many cases the unsplit version comes across as clumsy or strange. "This is the sort of arrant pedantry up with which I will not put," as W. Churchill is supposed to have said, seems oddly phrased - and it was intended that way.

Actually, in Latin and the Romance languages, the infinitive is a single word, and can't be split.
