One of the things [livejournal.com profile] jmaynard and I buy at faires is soap. There are various scents and while we have our preferences, it's nice to have a change every now and then, so we tend to get a variety. The vendor we like to deal with wasn't at Siouxland (family issue, we were told) nor at WiRF when we went there. As the supply was getting low, Jay ordered some more. When the shipment arrived, the vendor had included a couple scents that weren't ordered, evidently as samples to try. One is Ginger Orange, which we have yet to try. The other is "100% Vegetarian Honeysuckle." Jay took one sniff of that and decided it was too flowery and wanted nothing to do with it.

Since he's gone this week, I decided to use it. Yep, it's flowery alright. But it's familiar. I recalled the scent from childhood, from when the family lived in town or at least from that block (one set of grandparents lived on the same block, so even after moving away it was a common area to visit). I don't recall where on that block, exactly, but I do recall that scent. I never knew the name of it, nor would I have been able to identify the flower, but now I know. It's honeysuckle and there's no mistaking it.

I love honeysuckle as a plant smell... but in a soap, I agree. Too flowery for me!

I prefer my soaps to be in the cinnamon/ginger/spice scent ranges.

Yeah, I definitely prefer the spicy end of the range.

Is it bad to admit that I love the scent of lavender? I know it's old-fashioned, but it's such a fantastic smell!

When I was in fifth grade, my family lived in a house with a honeysuckle bush growing along part of the fence. I'm embarrassed to say I don't remember how they smelled, but I remember that a detached blossom had one portion that one could pull out, drawing out a small, sweet-tasting drop of liquid.

They smelled just as nice as that drop of nectar inside tasted. Nature wins for truth in advertising with this particular plant.

The only problem was fending off the various bees, wasps, and other insects that also wanted the sweets!

Out of curiosity, do you buy from Seventh Sojourn? One of my friends works in their booth when they're at MNRF.

Seventh Sojourn is indeed the vendor we were looking for, and the one from which Jay ordered.

Why is it 100% vegetarian?

No animal fats or animal fat derivatives used in the production, I assume. I don't recall any of their other soaps being labeled 100% vegetarian.

Yup, honeysuckle does that. For 15 or 20 days each spring, it pervades the air with that unmistakeable scent. There are other plants that do the same thing when their season arrives. Blackberries here, and wild cherry. Lilacs when I lived in Michigan, but not enough of those around where we live here.

The neighbors usually potent lilacs didn't seem make themselves much known this year. Maybe we were out of town when they peaked.
