I don't know whether to be depressed or amused. There is a group calling itself "Accountable America" targeting Republican donors with threatening letters in an attempt to limit donations to 527 type organizations. Well, not only has it been exposed for what it is, IowaHawk has given them a good sending up with the letter he supposedly received from them, This is Your FINAL WARNING.

From what I gather, the number one reason why my good friend [livejournal.com profile] scooterbird is actively involved in one of America's "third parties", he is equally disgusted with Republican and Democratic shenanigans (both parties are not immune). I still very much like Sen. Obama's run for the presidency, but nobody told other Democrats (even if they aren't a Hillary supporter) that "dirty politics as usual" doesn't build credibility. I never judge a candidate by the work of their supporters, I'd never vote that way! (Much as how, I guess, I consider myself a believer in, and folower of, Jesus Christ, while actively disavowing, disassociating, shaking my head sadly at, and lashing out at people who set my religion backwards a couple millennia or so.)

Understandable. Alas, this year the two best known or most likely to be considered to have anything even resembling a chance someday parties, the Libertarians and the Greens, both have rather uninspiring Presidential candidates. The Libertarians have a former Republican and the Greens have a former Democrat. That in itself might not be bad, but it's which ones they both have. Not that either of them has a snowball's chance in Guam. At best enough votes for them might tug the major parties a bit in the next election.

Granted, the right way to get a new party into things is to start at the local level and work up. Get people used to the idea of candidates, successful ones, with that party affiliation. The low level stuff is hardly as glamorous (if any office can be said to be so) but positive results are more likely.

Actually, one of the groups railing hardest against the "Accountable America" folks are Hillary supporters. (NOTE: I do not for a moment believe that Barack Obama actually has anything to do with these "Accountable America" clowns.) Whatever Republicans and their supporters might say about Obama, it all pales compared to what at least some of the remaining Hillary supporters say.

Yes, [livejournal.com profile] scooterbird, who is a Green, agrees with you on the GP candidate. He supported someone else who was a lot more credible, but, for whatever reason, they decided to vote for McKinney instead (and, not being active in US politics, even I was going "wtf?" when I learned that she named a "hip hop activist" as her running mate. I suddenly understood why [livejournal.com profile] scooterbird was supporting Johnson.)

I'm of the mindset that both parties don't stand a "snowball's chance in Guam" (nice analogy) not really because of anything either party has done (well, not primarily, though they have some "growing up" to do, but so do the "Big Two") but mainly because of the MSM, and their focus on the "Big Two" so much that it's hard-wired in the American mindset that the US is a two-party country and can't be anything else. (Interesting, as Americans traditionally deplore one-party states, saying it's undemocratic, yet a two-party state is the minimal amount of democracy needed to distinguish yourself from a one-party state. Whereas Canada has 5 major federal parties (4 nationally) and we're sometimes portrayed as "leftist Commie pinkos" (qv. Canuckistan). I'll never understand Americans.)

Oops, that should be "Canada has 4 major federal parties (3 nationally)", forgot about the PC-CP merger a few years back.

(And also strange that I've never had an "edit" button appear in my replies)
