That's how I (and many others) think of it. The EAA has branded the gathering under the name AirVenture which doesn't do anything for me. I haven't been to the gathering, ever. That is about to change.

In a couple hours, [livejournal.com profile] jmaynard and I will be flying to Merrill, WI. We'll stay overnight with my folks there, and then we all (not sure of the exact arrangements) will be going to Oshkosh, possibly by way of Appleton and spending much of the day there. The plans are not exact. We might return to Fairmont Thursday evening, or we might stay another night in Merrill and return on Friday.

We all know that one day at Oshkosh is not enough to see everything. We don't plan to try to see everything. Myself, I don't have any specific plans to see anything. There will be plenty pretty much anywhere I care to look.

I honestly didn't know that Oshkosh qualified to have the phrase "one day is not enough to see everything" to be used as a descriptor for it. Pretty much the only thing that comes to mind when I hear "Oshkosh" is "children's clothes", that's it. (And not because I'm a parent of two young-uns, it's always been like that.) Enlighten me, o cheese-head*, what's there to see?

*Yes, I know you aren't a cheese-head "per se" (I don't think so anyways), but you ahve family there and you think there's a lot to do in Oshkosh, so at least you're an honorary one.

On just about any other week of the year, Oshkosh might not be any big deal, outside of the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) Museum. This particular week, there's a rather large gathering of aircraft, aircraft manufacturers, aircraft homebuilders, and just about any company that has anything to do with aviation. It's not just experimental and homebuilt planes. There are plenty of military planes of various vintages and various nationalities. We decided not to fly into Oshkosh because it's far too busy an airspace. This week it is the busiest airport in the world, with the busiest control tower in the world.

To visit every vendor and display and see every plane, would simply take more than a day. Some say the gathering is too large to be able to see it all in the week it goes on. The way to view it is to not worry about you might be missing, you'll always have something to see that someone else is missing.
