vakkotaur: Centaur holding bow - cartoon (rain)

The flat bicycle tire I didn't really fix has finally been replaced. I had the new inner tube, but new tires were on order. The tires arrived Monday. Naturally the last weekend was good cycling weather. And then I was out of town for a few days, so [livejournal.com profile] jmaynard picked up the tires.

I got home a few days ago, but didn't really have time or reasonable weather to take care of things. Today wasn't just too hot, and there was sufficient break in the rain that things dried up for a while, so I finally managed to change the flat. I'm leaving the other tire alone for now. New tube, new tire, and while the wheel was off of the bike, I drove to a gas station with an air compressor and got it properly inflated.

Once things were reassembled it was time for a ride. I didn't get just too far. Things went well with the bike, but the sky got dark and then I felt a few light drops so I turned around. Somewhat to my surprise I managed to get home without getting soaked. I got back just in time. There's plenty of rain and thunder now. I don't think I'll be going anywhere this evening.

You used an idiom a couple of times that I'm not familiar with. What do you mean when you say "it wasn't just too hot" and "I didn't get just too far"?

That it was not overly hot and that I did not get very far. I'm not sure where exactly I picked up that bit of phrasing. I grew up in and around Merrill, Wisconsin and have German ancestry if that might help any.

Thanks! I like finding new-to-me idioms.

You're welcome. If you have list of such things, it would be interesting to see them posted sometime.

Alas, there is no list. I just feed them to my brain and get surprised when I catch myself using them later.

Like I, as a Canadian, find myself using "y'all" quite a bit (I blame it on my friendship with a Southerner (Pixiesnix - Vakko might know of her))

I use "y'all" too, but for me it came from Latin classes. "Standard" English doesn't provide a good way to demonstrate to the teacher that you do know which person of the verb you're translating, so a lot of us Midwesterners used "y'all" for that, and for me it stuck.

"Y'all" is readily understood. It took me a bit to catch on to the usage of "all y'all" and I'm still not entirely sure I have it right.

Basically, "y'all" is both second person plural and the familiar form of the second person singular; differentiate from context. "All y'all" implies a larger group than "y'all", and also is used where "all of you" would be appropriate.

Auf Deutsch, "jetst" means yet, already, still, and (in some senses) once. "Sehr" is "very"; not sure about "overly". I suspect "jetst su" may be a localism amongst those who settled the Merrill area (not documented).
