We ([livejournal.com profile] jmaynard and I) got started fairly early. We managed to be on the road around 7:30 AM and reached Mount Vernon, IL a little after 6 PM. It was less than 12 hours on the road, but still a long day. I suspect neither of use stayed properly hydrated, though I think I did manage to drink a bit more water than on the Penguicon trip. I still drank two glasses of water at Cracker Barrel before the food arrived.

Tomorrow's segment of the trip will be a bit shorter in mileage and not have the majority in IL, which is a 65 MPH speed limit state - unlike almost every other state in I've traveled. So getting to Huntsville should go fairly quickly and we can start out a bit later if we like. And maybe I'll manage to drink more water and not feel a bit off upon arrival.

And now the rant: Can we just nuke the snapsh*t idiots already? Please? A small one should do.[1]

I'm using the Mac Powerbook, and I'm not sure if I can edit the hosts file and have it take, which while admittedly something of a dirty solution it's the only solution that actually works every time, forever for getting rid of the craptastic snapsh*t barf when I view some folks journals.

[1] Rant applies to LJ, not IJ. IJ is clearly the sane one here.

On your way

Snapsh*t? Oh right, that thing I never see in Firefox with NoScript. :}

If I didn't find FireFox weird and clunky, I'd use it as my primary browser rather than as my secondary.

However, the Firefox fanboyism did remind me of a couple things that [livejournal.com profile] yakko once mentioned: this (http://spacecowb0y.livejournal.com/281574.html) and this (http://spacecowb0y.livejournal.com/281574.html?thread=174054#t174054).

Now I can:
1. Continue to use my preferred browser.
2. Not be annoyed with the snapsh*t.
3. Still use scripting for something useful. Surprisingly, scripting can be useful at times. It's just that those times are rare.

The useful thing? A custom button to add ?style=mine to the URL and reload, to override hideously bad color schemes and goofy layouts.

That last thing might make my life a little easier; I'm still adding ?style=mine manually where needed.

I'm not sure what incantations are needed for FireFox, but the scriptlet my button is based on was this:

javascript:location.search+=(location.search?'&':'?')+'style=mine'

I suspect someone has written something for the Greasemonkey... scriptset or whatever it is.

I believe any javascript: can be turned into a bookmarklet in Firefox. I'll have to test this.

As Vakko said, just add a new bookmark to the Personal Toolbar with this javascript: as the Location:

javascript:location.search+=(location.search?'&':'?')+'style=mine'

And now when you hit a LJ URL without the style= on there, just click on the bookmarklet you created, and PRESTO!
