vakkotaur: (test pattern)

Most Sundays [livejournal.com profile] jmaynard and I go out for breakfast and one fellow who works at the restaurant takes his family to Disney World every year This morning I just happened to ask him, "What's up, Doc?" and he pointed out that was a Warner Bros. thing and he was more a Disney type. Thinking the incident over a bit, a question came to me: Is there any popular phrase that makes Disney or a Disney character immediately come to mind?

For Warner Brothers there are a few phrases: "What's up, Doc?" "Th-th-that's all, folks!" "Of course you know, this means war." and even "I tawt I taw a puddy-tat. I did. I did taw a puddy-tat!"

But all I can think of for Disney are musical items such as, "When You Wish Upon A Star" or the derogatory usage of Mickey Mouse to describe a (I am trying not to say 'goofy') screwy system.

Am I overlooking something? Is there some character quotation that is fairly common that instantly brings a Disney character to mind?

"Donald, I don't think we should do that."

"Here, Pluto."

"Now let's get ready for our show."

"The wonderful color World of Disney."

**SINGS** (poorly) "It's a small world after all."

"I just don't deserve you, Gaston."

Those are lines that stick out of my head.

I would think, while not a specific quote per se, definitely brings a Disney character to mind, and that is talking like a duck (not "quack, quack, quack" but rather talking in a way reminiscent of Donald.)

The only things that comes to me is Goofy's Gawrsh and his trademark yodel as he flies off into the distance. I suppose that's a Yaaaahoohoohoohoo!

I suppose Donald's angry quacking is pretty iconic, as well as Tinkerbell doing the wand thingy, but... I just can't think of anything.

No, which explains the inferiority of Disney perfectly.

Disney Characters are boring.
But Goofy says GAWRSH
And Roger Rabbit says P-l-l-l-l-lease

Having seen some relatively early Disney cartoon shorts, I think it might be better to say that Disney characters have become boring.. or perhaps were not allowed to fully evolved truly interesting personalities. Some of the early shorts were quite funny. Chip and Dale could be real rascals.

Mickey may the be symbol, but it seems to be Goofy that people remember - and then I suspect it's sort of a Jimmy Stewart thing going on: It's easy to do his voice and get things close that people know which simpleton is being impersonated. It seems that there aren't any quotations as such that are memorable for Disney characters so much voicings.

Oh, also, I agree that WB has better personality to their characters. "Hello, nurse!"

WB (at least the early days) made a point of playing to the adults, while giving the kids something to watch. Disney plays to the kids, and ignores the adults, except to find ways to get them to cough up more money on a continuing basis.

As a music teacher, I have many examples of great ways to impart classical music to children by using all of the older Looney Tunes cartoons (and I have, regularly). Disney? Well, there's Sleeping Beauty and the Tschaikovsky music, and...and...

well you could always do the "goofy laugh" or begin sputtering like donald duck - those are fairly recognizable but not really quotes =)

then again "Aww gee Minnie" said in a squeaky voice would be pretty recognizable too =)
