After leaving Corbin, KY
jmaynard and I headed to Oak Ridge, TN and the American Museum of Science and Energy there. There was, of course, much about the WWII origins of the place and the work for the Manhattan Project. There were also other science museum sorts of things, showing off various principles or technologies. Even the restrooms let you know you are in a science museum with strategically placed posters.
We drove through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on Hwy 441 in Tennessee. Where there are views, they are impressive. It's something to consider that that winding road was the good way through the area and the survey teams must have been through plenty of not so good ways. According to GPS we peaked at about 4,980 feet (or just a bit less) before coming back down. This is a road to take in lower gear, both up and down. Especially down.
Now we're in Cherokee, NC for the night. That's not just the name of the town. That's the identity of the place. The street signs are in both English and Cherokee.
Tomorrow we travel to Huntsville - and not on Hwy 441 through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park again. It's very nice, but tomorrow will be long enough without spending that much time in low gear.
