While looking at Looney Tunes comic covers to perhaps advance things a bit, a problem arose. Now, I have a fairly good familiarity with the characters, but I'm stumped.

Take a look at this:

or this:
http://www.dccomics.com/directcurrents/comics/Jan02/covers/down/dlt86.jpg
and see if you can figure out who or what are casting the shadows seen in the window in the upper left.

And yes, I've already checked with the World's Looniest Expert.. er, the the World Expert on Looney Tunes, [livejournal.com profile] michaelmink and he's not sure either.

I vote that it is an odd representation of Sam the Sheepdog (http://www.nonstick.com/characters/sheepdog.html), based on the ears, and the hair above the round nose. The wierd yellow spot in the middle of the head is the cartoonishly-open mouth.

It would have to be odd. The ears are abnormally long, but I can see that for effect (or unusually lousy artwork for a cover). Michael suggested Sam as well, eventually, but I couldn't see it from the light shining through - all the other shadows act as expected except for lines to show an arm. No eyes are shown, etc.

I think I'd have to see a picture of Sam in the required pose to be sure of it.

Some time ago I did e-mail David Alvarez who probably did the cover art about it, but never got a reply. This cover is unusual as there are no artist signature credits on it. I think almost every issue since 1997 or so has had cover signatures. I'm wondering if perhaps they looked at that shadow, didn't have time to fix it, and went with it but refused to put their names on it.

I'm pretty sure I'm right, but you gotta be looking at it with the right frame of mind or it doesn't look like it at all. If I can, I'll try printing it out, and sketching out the details on it so it looks like Sam the Sheepdog, the way I'm looking at it...

One of Bugsy (The gangster's) thugs?

The big dumb one whose name completely escape me.

IIRC he sometimes did wear rabbit ears.

The presence of Bugsy in the centre middle window is what leads me to believe this.

But Bugsy never had more than Mugsy, and none of the other shadows are "enhanced" with anything, at least not beyond obvious (and typical for them) 'props'.
