Last year as I was working to get my weight down I had a specific craving for a while. It was for fried chicken from KFC. I could have gone to KFC right away as there is a KFC in town. Instead I held off for a couple weeks to see if the craving would go away. It didn't, but I found I could ignore it most of the time and go on. When I finally did go to KFC the result was rather disappointing. I've had no great urge to go to KFC again.

In December [livejournal.com profile] cuttercoon introduced me to proper sushi when I visited Florida. For a couple months I hadn't really thought about it. However in the last few weeks I've had a bit of a craving for sushi. This time the delay isn't about proving to myself that I can make it wait until things are more on my terms, or not fully so. This time it's lack of availability. Sushi means a two hour drive to the Twin Cities, or (and this surprises me some) Sioux Falls. There might be a place in Mankato, only an hour away, but that's in a mall and I'm leery of mall food to start with. I suspect mall sushi is a Really Bad Idea.

I get to Sioux Falls about once a month, and the Twin Cities a few times a year. Another factor is [livejournal.com profile] jmaynard. Often we make the trip together and thus dine together. He does not care for sushi. I figured maybe I could visit [livejournal.com profile] sistaur and we'd go to a good sushi place, but she's just back from Florida and wasn't feeling the best after her last sushi experience, which whether related or not has put her off sushi for a while.

I expect I'll have opportunity sometime, I just don't know when. I just hope I don't have the same experience I did with KFC: being pretty much done with it. I don't expect so. I don't think I have too much to worry about as I think it was deep frying that didn't do anything for me.

It's not at all the same, but [livejournal.com profile] jmaynard and I will be going out for Chinese for lunch. At least it's Oriental.

Many Chinese buffets have some sushi rolls available, you may want to see if there's one nearby. There's a huge difference between good sushi and bad sushi, alas; I haven't found many places that make the good sushi.

My experience with most Chinese buffet places has me avoiding most Chinese buffet places. There are only two Chinese restaurants in town, and I've given up on one of them. There are a few in Mankato, but the one there I like didn't have sushi. They do have a few good Thai dishes on the menu, which is one of the reasons why I like it.

What kinds of sushi did you like?

Really, I don't recall. We went to a place with an all-you-can-eat arrangement (just be sure to eat what you order - they charge for leaving leftovers) and ordered a bit of this and a bit of that. I pretty much just followed [livejournal.com profile] cuttercoon's advice. Additionally I steered clear of tuna just because I don't care for tuna. I recall having both sets of rolls and individual items.

My personal favourites are Tamago Nigiri (sweet egg on rice), Amaebi (raw sweet shrimp on rice), Kappa Maki (cucumber roll) and the local Green Dragon which is a Dynamite Roll with avacado on top, arranged in the form of a Chinese dragon.

Not knowing Iowa school locations well, I would ask if Sioux Falls is home to a university or two. If that is so, then the availability of sushi would make sense; university students (especially those into anime in a big way) are inordinately fond of the stuff. Some of the best sushi bars in the Midwest can be found down in Rolla, near the University of Missouri campus (engineering and computer geeks love sushi).

As for Chinese buffet sushi, no thanks. If I cannot see it being prepared, I won't eat it.

Is always worth the drive. As for mall sushi. Look at it and also look at how crowded it is. Mall sushi might just be fine as they have a high turn over rate and go through it a lot faster meaning fresher stuff.

Well, since Sioux Falls is in South Dakota... but there is SDSU there. The reviews I've read for the place (Sushi-masa) are all pretty good. I expect it is quite good, it's just a matter of being able to go there when in Sioux Falls.

That still means having to endure the Riverside Maul.

KFC killed itself for us when they came out with their "rotisserie" chicken. It sounded like a good idea, so we tried it. Exactly once.

It had a horrible coating that transferred itself to your mouth, and it took some diligent toothbrushing to get rid of.

We've never gone to a KFC since.
