What a difference a week can make.

Remember last Monday? The day getting to work meant shoveling half of the driveway, getting stuck in the parking lot, and deciding it wasn't worth going back at noon as the roads and streets were that crappy?

Today is another Monday. I didn't bother with a jacket when I left for work. Not even a windbreaker. The forecast high is 87 F, which could well be a record breaker.

Of course, it could snow later this week.

Now that's quite amazing. I'm sure you'd be hard pressed to find a place on earth that has a more variable climate than that! It makes me appreciate just how much living next to an ocean serves to moderate climate.

I live about 25 miles away from the Atlantic Ocean. Don't like the weather? Wait five minutes. Last week, we had a couple inches of snow on the ground, then we had heavy rains Friday night into Saturday. Today it's in the 50s Farenheit, and tomorrow the forecast high is 75F. After that? We go back down to the 40s F. :P

Maybe the southern Pacific Ocean is far less fickle?

Living, as I do, 4,500km from the Southern Pacific, I can't really comment on the efficacy of that particular ocean in moderating climate. But maybe I should modify my statement to include being thankful for not having much of the top end of my continent buried under permanent ice fields.

I seem to have heard that line every place I've been, except possibly on the west coast. Heard in WI, in MN, in TX, and in IA.. so far.

Maybe there's the common thread. Perhaps the Pacific is a far more tempered ocean? (Yes, I realize you're in the middle of the country, away from the ocean's effects.)
