I'd been having some trouble with a KVM switch as while percheron kept on working right, belgian would lose pointer sanity and the trackball wouldn't track when switch away and back. This weekend that KVM was replaced with one of a couple that [livejournal.com profile] jmaynard got by way of [livejournal.com profile] wendyzski. Now I can switch between belgian and percheron without losing the pointer and needing to restart things.

It's amazing how flaky and unreliable KVM switches can be. I had a pricy one (about $250) fail here at the library last year. Symptoms as you describe, lock ups, wild mouse pointers, etc. Went back to using two keyboards, two monitors, two mice for a few months. When the new budget started, we ordered a cheap KVM switch ($40) to do the same job. So far it works. But at least if it fails we won't have wasted as much money. Disadvantage of the cheap one: it only works from keyboard signals, and doesn't have a manual switch you can flip.

This one is a Compaq and works from the keyboard, but it's programmable and doesn't act cheap. The Belkin, which has a selector switch, that it replaced is going into the basement where I have a few machines that tend to only be on one at a time anyway. Also, the Belkin is old enough that is has the larger keyboard connector and serial connectors (as well as PS/2) for the trackball.

I've noticed one minor issue with the Compaq KVM. When I switch back to belgian after a long time away and the screensaver has kicked in, the block of video used by the KVM for machine selection persists. Just activating the menu again (Print Screen) and selecting belgian again takes care of that.
