ACRF: Sunday
5 September 2006 11:50I thought I'd get out of the hotel earlier and arrive a bit earlier. That only almost happened. It rained Saturday night and Sunday morning, so the start to Sunday was even slower than usual, but things did pick up as the day went on and while there was a bit of drizzle once or twice later, it was was generally just overcast and starting to get sunny later in the day. The parking area seemed to be fairly well used so someone had to been there.
I saw a bit of Ministry of Petty Offenses show and decided it just wasn't for me. I had about the same reaction to one of Gilroy's bits. Not that either was bad, it was they weren't what I care for.
I sampled one of the local wines, as I had Saturday, and later after
wendyzski recommended it tried a local beer as well. She was right, it was good. And that was more than enough alcohol for the day, so I went back to water and plenty of it.
One thing I enjoyed was when someone wanted a picture of Jenn (of World's Best Meats, selling jerky) and myself. Jenn didn't object and I certainly didn't. Though to my discredit I didn't recognize her, despite having bought from her the day before. I don't recall if I gave someone the camera I was carrying to take a couple pictures as well or not.
The jousters, other than the injured one of course, had a couple of their horses out later in the afternoon. I met Captain (the 8 year old percheron) and, for a nominal fee, was lead around on his back for a while. There will, eventually, be pictures.
This time there was bit going on for closing gate, with a minor glitch that someone (not Bawd) started in on a tune that wasn't a good general audience choice, which is needed for a closing gate bit in rural Iowa . Overall it went well. Minstrosity played, Danza danced, all was well.
Another gathering was decided upon, I'm not sure when or by whom, but it was. This time it was the Ox Yoke restaurant near I-80 which is right next to the place we went the night before. I recall the directions when someone asked how to get there: Do the same as last night, just turn into a different parking lot.
I hauled Mistress Bawd's cart back to her tent and then to her van and everything in it was packed up pretty quick. I rode with her up to my car, dropped off a few things, and then rode with her to the restaurant.
The Ox Yoke on I-80 was chosen because it wasn't the place of the night before (which was good but why do it twice?) and because it had enough room to seat a large group. When we arrived, someone had already warned them that a group was about to arrive, but the numbers weren't certain. I heard, and in a place or two was part of the following dialogue:
"Fifteen?"
"That's a good lower estimate."
"We're short-staffed tonight."
* Waiter looks a bit panicked already *
"Just set up the tables, set up glasses, and several pitchers of icewater - that will relieve the big pressure."
"I'll do that."
The group started at about fifteen and grew. By the time we got around to counting, it was 27. Drew, the waiter, did very well under the circumstances and he most certainly earned his tips (which were substantial). Not only did he keep things flowing very well for being only one person, he did so while putting up with after faire silliness, like the reaction to BEETS! and, as mentioned there, the singing in appreciation of his efforts*. Read that link, I'll wait. Okkay, back? Good.
I was again near Minstrosity and Mistress Bawd, and while
foolscap001 and
irpooh were not there,
rillaspins was. There was a bit of a feedback loop about Jay's brown(?) doublet between the two costumers. I suppose that was inevitable.
After the meal, Drew asked about dessert> I know he had to, but it seemed to be inviting trouble - there were many separate checks to keeps track off. After a bit of consultation with someone he asked everyone who wanted pie to raise a hand, and then declared that it would be free. That way there would be no need for him to track all the checks for dessert.
One thing mentioned at supper was that we (whoever "we" may be) need to get Bawd on livejournal. I agree. She was a bit surprised to fidn out how many of us were using LJ and seemed to be appreciative fo the (misnamed) friends list so there's one link to make it easy to keep up with things.
As people got up from the table to deal with the checks and meet a bit with the folks that weren't seated nearby Drew sat down probably for the first time in at least a couple hours. He was leaning over a bit and the look was the picture of exhaustion. Someone asked if also had to clear the table and found out that yes, he did. Nasira saw to it that he had a good back scratching.
Bawd then drove me back and dropped me off by my car. We ended up talking outside the vehicles for a quite a while before we both finally were on our respective ways.
* It was evident that Mistress Bawd and
wendyzski were both used to being in control of things. This once manifested when singing to the chef and Wendy made the "cut it out" signal... and Bawd, who seemed to be leading this... as much it's possible to lead a group like that, just kept on going full steam, seemingly now determined not to end just there.

wendyzski was clearing some things as the meal progressed. See her version (http://wendyzski.livejournal.com/490273.html) of things if you haven't already.
