vakkotaurI do not like peas. Peas taste terrible. Peas taste awful. Peas taste terribly awful and awfully terrible. Canned peas, frozen peas, peas by themselves or peas in other things... it's all bad. So it was with great trepidation last night that I worked up the nerve to sample wasabi peas.
These were dry. These were crunchy. These had a spicy horseradish coating. These.. did not taste like peas. I had to check the label. The label says they are indeed peas. Evidently drying them so they don't feel slimy or mushy or such and draining or vaporizing the liquid to remove the worst of the pea flavor really improves things. The spicy coating likely masks whatever little nasty pea flavor may be left. The result is a process that does something I had not imagined possible: It actually renders peas edible, and not just in the technical sense of "you won't die of poisoning if you ingest this (you'll just wish you had)" which is as close as peas normally ever get to being truly edible.
