I woke not too late and got ready for the day. A few places were suggested for breakfast, but most were chains and so I opted for the Hanover Pancake House (I think that was name) as it was unique to Topeka. The food was good.
After breakfast,
ginafae showed me the state capitol building and I did get a Topeka post card there. I was a bit surprised to see what seemed to be a statue of
howardtayler there, but it wasn't Howard, it was Eisenhower. I'm not sure how much resemblance there is or if I was still a bit tired and the iced tea hadn't kicked in yet. Cassandra was in need of attention and so we didn't do more sightseeing. I could have seen the school involved in Brown vs. Board of Education. I don't mind not having seen the infamous Phelps compound.
After much more conversation, I finally headed out. It was well after noon and my trip was longer than expected. Perhaps I should have left earlier, but I didn't want to. Either in Kansas or Nebraska I ran into some heavy rain. It was pull over and wait it out heavy. It got dark and I was watching the clouds to make sure nothing was spinning. While it was nice to have the bugs cleaned off of the windshield, it was jarring to be in a rainstorm so intense it reminded me of driving through North Dakota in a bad snowstorm.
Lunch, or supper, was at a Sonic somewhere in Nebraska on Highway 75. Eventually I made way to I-29 in Iowa and was soon in South Dakota. I stopped in Sioux Falls just long enough to find that Rainbow was closed, so just drove home. I pulled in around 9 PM, and had the car unloaded by 9:30. Some things were even unpacked by then.
In the morning I'd noticed that SpiritWolfe hadn't taken everything of his from the car. When I was unloading the car I found more stuff that should have been left in Kansas City. So I have to mail those off too, and like Deyna's stuff, that will be taken care of next week as I'll be at the Siouxland Renaissance Festival this weekend.
