If you don't care how I spent Saturday, then skip this.

[livejournal.com profile] jmaynard and I went to Sioux Falls today so I could pick up some comics (and bags and boards) from Rainbow. Oddly, they did not have Looney Tunes 98 so I couldn't immediately snag an extra copy for [livejournal.com profile] michaelmink. But I did order a copy. If need be I'll dig out a copy I have and send it, and use the ordered copy as a replacement.

Then it was lunchtime, but we had a meal big enough to deserve the name dinner. Nap's Alabama Barbecue does quite well and isn't exactly a place you'd expect to find in South Dakota. The ribs aren't just a mess with bones, but actually have meat on them. The garlic potatoes are good and don't have (or need, as if anything would,) gravy. Also, if one does decide to indulge in dessert they have nice, proper brownies with no landmines^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hnuts in them.

With the bags and boards, I think I finally have all the comics boarded and bagged. Now the Great Sorting and Arranging can commence. I expect I'll need more magazine holders or whatever to neatly stores the comics on shelves. Hopefully there'll be enough shelf space.

Also checked over the settings on the Wal-Mart Microtel box. Seems they got it right. The 100/133 MHz jumper was set to 133 rather than the default 100. And the CDRW was put on IDE 2. Installing the (non Wal-Mart) HDD was a bit more than normal as the front panel had to be removed from the computer case, and mounting brackets had to be put on the HDD. This allowed use of a 5 inch bay for a 3.5 inch drive, so the drive cooling fans can be made useful. The only snag was a lack of sharp (wood?) screws for mounting the cooling fan assembly properly. Oh, also removed the (useless to me) winmodem. Now if only they'd sent the slot cover plate along...

And then after not too much looking, I found memory at a tolerable price. And unlike my last experience this went perfectly well, like on-line commerce ought to work. The only annoyance is that the email confirmation they sent was just html. Blech. Once more, you'd expect a techie computery company to have more clue than that. But in a few days I'll have the memory.

When the system is all put together, I'll be in an unusual position - I'll have the system with the most memory in the house. I don't expect that situation to last, and it doesn't have to. All I want is for the system to be Not Slow.

Not bad for a Saturday. I expect Sunday will be a bit slower, but that's part of what a weekend is for, isn't it?

You might have the system with the most memory for quite a while; none of my current systems except the Proliant can accept more than they already have, and that one doesn't need more than 768 MB.
