Penguicon

Penguicon has been fairly busy. After a late arrival Thursday and a night's sleep, Friday seemed to start off slow. I tried getting on the hotel wireless network but had trouble. I should have at least gotten to a point where it would have told me that it isn't free access, but didn't get that far. Hopefully I can find out what to do about that so I can use the free wireless networking at RCFM. Here, there is wired ethernet. With two laptops and one cable/port, that wouldn't quite do. A visit to a nearby Circuit City solved that with an inexpensive ethernet switch. Switches are now so inexpensive that hubs aren't to be easily found, but then with inexpensive switches there's no reason to settle for a mere hub.

We got our start out to the Apple store and Circuit City later than expected as after breakfast we met cathyr19355 and Eric Raymond and a few others who were about to have breakfast. They had breakfast, we sat and chatted with the group. Before and after, we also looked in on howardtayler who was wrangling the Choas Chaos Machine.

I've now had ice cream made with liquid nitrogen. The process looks simple enough, provided one can obtain and properly handle the liquid nitrogen. The results are quite good.

Frank Hayes is a guest here, and was interesting (along with a couple others) discussing and demonstrating filk. Other panels came up, so I didn't see their performance tonight, but I plan to see Frank's session tomorrow. Howard Tayler's Schlock Mercenary panel was, as expected, also good. The proof copy of the first book looks really good.

There was a bit on "Real Stories from the ER" which was interesting. The stories, while there some obvious groans of disbelief at some stupidity, were things I could withstand. It was some of the photographs that I turned away from.

My initial impression of Penguicon is a good one. It seems rather relaxed, at least so far. The Saturday schedule appears to be packed rather solid, so that might change some. I don't recall seeing any tails like I would at a furcon, but I have seen a couple sets of ears and one very set of horns.

I did something I hadn't expected, or perhaps I should I allowed something to be done to me which isn't something I would have expected. Megan Gedris, for whatever reason, started drawing "Girls with Ray Guns" on people's arms. She's good. I have one of her images on my right arm, for now. The sketch has a rather 1950s look to it. I had Jay take a photo of the drawing, so eventually I'll post a picture where folks can see it. Don't expect it until sometime I after I get back to Fairmont.

Actually, I saw *two* fans with tails. One was a slender young man with a skinny black tail, like a cat's. The other was a blonde woman who was wearing black rabbit ears, a black cape, and a gray raccoon tail. I think it was a raccoon tail, anyway.
