Sleazeball #1: K-Designers

A couple times now I've gotten a bit of advertising that is almost but not quite a postcard. It has a printed note that tries and utterly fails to look like a personal handwritten note, asking me to please call an 800 number in the next five days implying that waiting too long will mean I won't get a free, pardon me, FREE George Foreman Grill. It's from an alleged "Awards Coordinator" and lacks any return address.

Smells like a scam of some kind, doesn't it? It is. Googling for the 800 number reveals the scam. It's a means of getting folks to call them, thus bypassing telemarketing rules. Then they try to sell siding.

What amuses me is that I've gotten two of these, weeks if not months apart. Do they expect I'll be worried about missing another phony five day window?

They have a new card now. It's still a "free gift, call us" ploy, but at least now the card has K-Designers' return address as an identifying mark.]

Sleazeball #2: MG2

A couple days ago there was a card in the mail and it looked somewhat like a state lottery scratch-off ticket. The gimmick is that if you uncovered numbers that made one of the winning patterns on the bingo cards printed on the thing, you had a chance of winning one of several prizes. There is also a bit of arithmetic to do so that it isn't a lottery as far the law is concerned. There is a number to call if one wins.

So far it's just strange, but there is also the fine print. Unfortunately for sleazeballs I am both suspicious and literate. The catch? If you call the number, you play and players "agree to a demonstration of an MG2 home care product." There is, of course, "no obligation to buy" but really, expect pressure even if it is not stated outright.

These sleazy come-ons are amusing in a sad way. I am amused that someone thinks I'll fall for this crap. I am rather depressed that there are probably enough folks who will fall this crap that it will be considered worth the effort and expense. If someplace must resort to this level of sleazy advertising, doesn't that say something about the value of what they offer?

[ADDENDUM: Today, 11 August 2009 at 3:37 PM Central Daylight Time, I received a phone call from someone at Supreme Air (according to the Caller ID [IJ: Caller ID photo]), claiming to be a lawyer named Mark Wahlberg representing Tri-Star.[1] He claimed to be calling to confirm my address[2] so he could send a registered letter about a libel action in regard to this post.[3] He insisted that I had posted a claim that the company was acting illegally, but would not say where or how I had done so. He claimed "to be reading the web page" and then claimed he had "read it four times today and didn't need to read it again" yet could not point out the alleged actual claim.

I doubt very much that this is any coincidence with the spate of anonymous replies from IP 75.158.95.1 made by someone claiming to be Bill Duncan.[4] Such replies generally have attacked others here who have posted anything critical of MG2/Tri-Star/Supreme Air/etc. I cannot say for sure that it is the same person, but it is difficult to believe this is coincidence.

When I told a lawyer friend of mine about this call and went into the details there was disbelief that any lawyer would have to call someone to confirm their address. When I pointed out how bogus the name seemed I got the reply, "That's fraud. Possibly wire fraud, if he used the phone." and "If that was a lawyer calling using a false identity...um, bar disciplinary committees tend to take a very dim view of that." Considering the nature of the call, I very much doubt that "Mark Wahlberg" really is a lawyer at all. "Pretending to be a lawyer is arguably the practice of law without a license, which I think is a misdemeanor, but also fraud."

Thus the attempt to intimidate me regarding this post actually is an illegal action. Before that call, everything here only mentioned shady ethics and morals. I even pointed out that the arithmetic on the BINGO card was specifically to comply with legal requirements. But now I can factually state that someone at Supreme Air has committed fraud in an attempt to intimidate me. Obviously, that attempt has backfired with this addendum.

UPDATE: 2011 AUGUST 04 - It has been at least several months since this post has gotten any non-spam comment. I am getting several spam comments each week and am tiring of them. If LJ had a mechanism to restrict comments to registered users that could be used on an individual post basis, I would use it. As LJ does not have such a useful thing (and I have some reason not to disable all unregistered comments for the entire journal) I am now locking this post from further comment, at least until such time as a more refined means of spam-prevention (rather than recovery) becomes available on LJ. Spammers and spambots will not have this particular avenue even if the only one to see the result is me as I delete the offending crap. To any legitimate would-be commenters, there are other, related posts I am not (yet) locking down. Sorry for the inconvenience.

[2] And did so by asking for Mark, evidently forgetting that was his own alias. I happen to have a friend who is a lawyer and so I asked him about calling a party one is about initiate a legal action against to determine their address: "He *phoned* you? That's not standard practice."

[3] I asked my friend about this as well and pointed out the "offending" post (this one) and got this reply: "Pfffffffffffffft. Libel action, for this? Rubbish. I think any lawyer would love to put him into deposition and show samples of the firm's ads and such. What does this mean, or what does that mean...."

It's not really a scam it's just an advertisement. Basiclly, if you call the number on that card you'll be connected to an inbound rep at our call center. Then they'll inform you that if you allow a sales rep to come out to your home and show you one of our two promotional products, either, 'Siding' or 'Windows', whichever one you're interested in then you'll receive a free george forman grill whether you decide to buy it or not. So as long as you just take a look at our product then you'll receive the grill. The appointment is very brief and the rep will only stay as long as you're interested and have questions. [And as far as the times go we go to different areas looking for promotional homes to help us advertise. That's why the card probably suggests urgency.]

I assure you K-Designers isn't a scam... we've been in buisness for 27 years and we're the #4 home remodling company in the US.

That card is just a ploy to get people to listen to our sales pitch. That's all. You really CAN get a free George Forman grill if you want one. :p

What the heck are they. I just found a bingo scratch off card stuck in my door. I really, really, like bingo, so, of course, I scratched it. Much to my surprise, since I'm not very lucky at bingo or scratch offs, I got a box on one of my cards. Well, of course I'm ready to pick up my $5000.00, cause the box is surely the hardest to get. But, but, what are MG2 Homecare Products. I don't think I want to call and find out, so if someone out there knows, please let me know. Thanks a lot.

I'm with you...just got the bingo card and I too am an avid bingo fan....however, I would rather really "win" something at Bingo than undergo the torture of a forced homecare presentation. We all know there is nothing "free" in this world...and I absolutely despise this kind of solicitation. In any event, I will never find out what MG2 Homecare Products are...as my "winning card"...and by the way there are 80 "winning
cards" in our immediate area..and yes, like yours....they must surely be winners as they all have "boxes" on them!!!!

Like you, I'd love to know who the "creative" mind is behind this scam!!!!

Hah, I just got one of these and googled the name for some info – you're entry was the first one up.

I 'won' it seems (got the square patten, which should be the hardest and thus the best prize... uh-huh). Though I'm not finding any other links to the company online, and I notice they have no 'contact' besides the phone number (which they have stamped with a local number and area code).

Uh huh... we got a 'box' winner in the second card too. Seems like these cards are probably all the same. I had a feeling this was a scam, glad everyone else posted so we can compare results.

I agree! I just got one as well. Unfortunately, people will probably fall for it. It would be nice to publicly expose and scold these people, but tearing the Bingo card up and tossing it in the garbage is as far as I go (besides searching for the scam on the internet and writing this reply). At least 2 of us aren't falling for it!

Looks like it's moving West. We just got ours today and we are in the Okanagan in BC. There is a local Kelowna Ph. # to call. I "won" on the top right hand bingo card also, a box, so that gives you all others as well, except the X. Canadian law requires a skill testing question. I guess that's not required in USA. Interesting that Quebecers can't play. I guess there are so many home grown scams, they don't want any competition.
This is a good site. I'll bookmark it.

In regards to your sleazeball allegations against MG2, I would have to whole heartedly agree with you. However, there is no need for me to not call them. Its actually a good way to "stick it to the man". I am going to call, win my free prize and listen to some drone try to sell me something with NO INTENT on buying. And if you think I'm crazy and there is no prize, my buddy just did the same thing I just mentioned and he won 2 night hotel accomodations anywhere in Canada or US... not too bad for listening to some dude talk himself into another failure.

I do not dispute that there is the possibility, however remote, of some prize, if one is willing to endure the pitch. As it's in the fine print, I suspect a few people are rather surprised and annoyed and then disqualified when they won't put with the pitch.

Just Googled MG2, like all of you intelligent consumers, I'm not easily fooled. Love that we all did the same thing! I, too, won with the box pattern on card two. Makes sense really, cuts down on the cost of production for the cards if you only have one type.

What I really get a kick out of is the little math quiz you have to take before calling. This ensures that the caller knows about the order of operations which probably ensures they're educated which probably ensures they fit the tax bracket MG2 is trying to sell to. Brilliant!

Funny- they asked for my phone number because they "dont have any salespeople in Ottawa", so I played along and gave them one. Haha, I just googled "mg2 homecare", just like everyone else... and I got the same box in the same upper-right bingo card. This card has a local Ottawa number on it, 613 742 0051, which is the number for "Ottawa Air Care Inc", listed in the Yellow Pages under "Carpet & Rug Cleaning Equipment & Supplies".

I just found this cute BINGO card in my mailbox today, searched the web found this site and began to laugh. As everyone else so far I to had the box formation in the second card! And yes all the numbers listed by the above poster match my card. So I phoned the number as listed on the back of the card and it was OTTAWA Air care inc. I asked what the promotion was for and was told that they would send a representative to my home to verify my card receive my prize and ask my opinion on a "new aged" electronic device that would replace vacuum cleaners!!! They are NOT as the women nicely emphaszied trying to sell anything the just want an opinion on the new device!!!
Makes me glad I found this site and read everything first. Thanks to all that have posted.

Quite honestly a bingo card stuck in your door is no worse than most commercials on tv (talk about sleazy advertising). If no-one got a bingo card then no-one would ever get to own the only cleaning system on the market that will last 25+ years and rid your home of 98% of all toxins, allergens, pollutions, odours, and viruses. Its not the people that call in that are the idiots...You guys are. A Tristar presentation does NOT require being hammered into buying anything (at least not supposed to be). The product sells itself...we just need a way to show it. Other companies have ruined that for us. So you can thank them for the Bingo Cards.

The method of selling requires tricking the potential customer with the bogus bingo card (has anyone ever "lost"?) The company that has ruined is ruining Tristar's reputation is Tristar. Honest companies, ones that don't use sleazy adverting tricks and are up-front about what they are selling, have no listing here. That is not a coincidence.

Just like the rest of you I am a winner too... and a dumb one, I called and gave them my phone# and address... and as they asked me some questions I realized what a scam it was... even having a winning card you have to qualify for what exactly? a bullshitting session? I am calling back to cancel it tomorrow!!! Haha... just last night, I saw somebody packing a vacuum cleaner in their trunk walking out of my neighbor<S unit... must have been the same story...

I too recieved one with that "elusive" Box winner. I love the power of a Google search. I suggest everyone call them. Use something like Skype so the don't get a caller ID, provide the name and address of someone your "not the best of friends with" or an address for a blank lot, then schedule an appointment. After the appointment day passes call them back irate that you waited and they never showed up. When they confirm the address tell them they wrote it down wrong an dthen provide them with yet another false one. Wait once again until the appointment date has passed and call them irate agin for not showing up............See how long they will try and keep coming.............

Very pleased to see that there is someone else with more of a brain than a sheep! Got the same Bingo card, and was suspicious right away.
Based on my quick web search I think that the demonstration is for a vacuum cleaner, and yes expect some pressure, and lot's of subtle attempts to suggest that you're a dirty pig if you don't buy it!!

same old , same old, from what i have read and research i have done this is just a scam that gets a vacuum sales person to your door. i remember this MG2 homecare from 35 - 40 years ago when it was called "compact" then it became tristar, now MG2 homecare. the sales tag of the time was "it's not a vacuum - it's a compact" they came to your home and did a demonstration of how dirty your home was. they asked if you had vacuumed lately and they went on to show you that the compact could pick up dirt that your vacuum left behind. low and behold after they left i went over the spot that they had used the compact (read tristar or MG2) on with my vacuum and using a new tissue over the filter and there was big patch of dust again. residue left from the compact. just another way of selling a very expensive vacuum cleaner.

Ok... so I just received the card too, and noticed how it said you're required to have an in home demonstration blah blah blah by MG2. Ok, so who's MG2? I googled, and found this... and a lot of Tristar links.

I know this is a crappy marketing strategy, but they would get what they need. They need to demonstrate this product.

My landlady has a Tristar vaccuum cleaner, and they are absolutely AMAZING. My girlfriend is extremely asthmatic and allergic and this vaccuum can cure her of these extremities. She's highly allergic to cats, yet we have 2. This takes all of the allergens and she's fine. This vaccuum also removes ALL dust, which is a huge factor with her asthma.

I understand this may SEEM like a scam, but it's not. You watch their demonstration from the comfort of your own home. If you don't want to buy it, they give you your gift and leave. Simple as that.

It sucks that the fineprint doesn't explain a little more, but oh well.

I just got one of these BINGO cards and I matched the patteren therefore I "won" So I called the # on the back. and I was told I would be visited by a rep of the company the next day. well the rep never showed and I called the # again and was told that they had run out of prizes for my area. However it states on the back of the card that "If prize is unavailable, sponsor my substitute prize of equal or greater value." I called Phone Busters and let them know of the scam. My thoughts on this is why would someone put so much time, money and effort into a scam that really doesn't get them anything? I did't have to pay them any money or anything.

Knowing full well that it was a scam, I scratched off the card anyways, and to my great surprise I realized I had won! Thinking to myself "Hey, maybe these people aren't that bad after all" I flipped the card over, looking for some sort of card identification number so they could check their database or whatnot to match up my card with whatever prize is appropriate for the box pattern. Sadly, there was no such number, and I can honestly say it feels like someone has just robbed me of $5000. Well, maybe not quite, but you know what I mean.

i got the bingo carda and eledgely won the 5,000 cash but i was suspicious so i googled MG2 Bingo and got this and so happy i did. I was about to call but it seamed wired so i know what to do now.

I got the same type of card with number 1-866-558-0051. I dialed the number and the person on the other end of the line answered by an annoyed-sounding "Hello". Very legit! lol

same card, same box.. called the number..voice mail said Vital Air Inc and due to the high volume of calls we cannot take your call at this time, please leave us your name and phone and we will get back to you... umm sure.. I blocked my number before calling so I do not think so...

GOt one recently and "won" the box format, has a new face but same format. I googled MG2 and surprize surprize, nothing came up but your page. I tossed it in the garbage as I don't feel like a "time share" type sales presentation that is going to give an unknown person access to my time, my house or anything else. Funny story: I have the sales "man" (more like boy)at my house trying to sell my boyfriend Joe, a vaccum.

Joe had "won" and called the number to get his prize. Within hours there is a guy selling a wicked-awesome vaccum.

Should I be questiong this relationship? ... I tihnk I just did.
