Judeo-Christian Ethics (The Golden Rule)

Essentially this ethical school of thought can be summed up in 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you'. Only do something to someone which you would like to have done to you in return. This is the ethical principal which is least prone to criticism.

Interesting, but is it accurately named?

Nah, highly immoral ethical system. It means I shouldn't give money to starving people unless I want starving people to give their money to me. I'd rather have the starving people keep their money and spend it on food. :)

I think you're taking things just a bit too literally. As I recall, [livejournal.com profile] foolscap001 related a very condensed story about a literal interpretation of "do unto other as you would have them do unto you" backfiring. Perhaps, "Do unto others as they wish done to them, within reason" is closer to the intent though the phrasing is rather clumsy and "within reason" vague enough to be twisted by the unscrupulous.
