After several trips to the license bureau over a few months, I finally have my license plates. Both of them. And they match. And the stickers on them also match. I put the plates on the car as soon as I got home. No more driving on one plate and a piece of paper in the rear window.

Except for the nagging question of who got the missing plate and what they did with it. Not that I want to puncture your zone of relief over this, but the whole story is really mind boggling.

It could be a problem, but I don't see it as very probable. Most likely someone else had a similar experience and the odd plate was returned, tossed, or kept as a souvenir. I do wonder just what happened for things to get out of sync. Did someone get only one plate? Did someone get three plates? If someone actually tries to use my missing plate, they likely have only the one and to affect me significantly would need to put it on a car that matches mine in make, model, and color.

Depends on the administrative departments in your state, I guess. I'd be very worried here in Illinois. Some drug dealer would use the plate and then have his car impounded. He'd jump bail and they'd end up looking for me instead...

Illinois is so bad at sharing important details from one department to another that they could have me locked up without bail for months before getting it cleared up, if ever.
