I've had my car long enough now the state of Minnesota is issuing new license plates for it. This should be no big deal, other than I have a state-issued piece of paper taped in the rear window showing that I did pay the registration renewal fee and that I am awaiting the new plates while still driving with the old ones. Today the new plates arrived, and tonight I figured I'd get changing the plates out of the way. Then I opened the envelope.

The envelope showed a plate with my callsign, N9IOG, as it should. The plate that was not showing should, of course, have also been N9IOG. It was not. Instead it was W9SIO. That's not my callsign. That callsign belongs to David Arnholt up in Moorhead, MN who was very surprised to get a call telling him I had one of his license plates. One of the plates he's been waiting for for some time from the sound of things. Tomorrow we'll each be making a trip to our local license bureau to try to get this straightened out.

A call sign is a call sign, right? *snicker*

One reason I have never changed my own call, even though I'd much prefer a shorter one and I'm eligible, is that it would be such a hassle getting Illinois to change my license plates to match. So I'll live with KA9NZI forever, or until I move to some other state I guess. (Even though K9NZI is now nicely available.)

I didn't get callsign plates for some time. It was only after getting fed up with needing to remember license plate numbers for various things and forgetting that I decided to put an end to the problem with callsign plates. At least I waited I had N9IOG (haven't changed despite moving to 0-land) though I really didn't have KB9CKS very long.

Heh. I've had KA9NZI since I was a novice, and now I have an OTC certificate and can join QCWA in just another year and a half. Another reason for not changing now is that I'd have to learn to stop sending the old call in morse, and get used to recognizing a new one. ;P

I got K5ZC before I got my first ham plates, so that wasn't a concern - and wouldn't have been anyway. Texas is pretty good about dealing with that.

Yeah. I do plan on having a couple photos taken of me holding both plates and such, so if do end up having someone asking about things I can show the exact cause of the delay in getting proper new plates.

I was once WN9JOT. This was back in 1972 when I was qualified to use code only and you had to get up to something like 20 wpm before you were allowed to talk (and thus graduate from "N" status). I never got over the hump, but I never had any equipment anyway, and soon lost interest.

Eleonora, I have forwarded your reply to David Arnholt. At least i used the address that qrz.com lists for him. Hopefully he will get that message, and will reply to you. You could also e-mail him directly. Just look up his callsign on qrz.com and click the 'Show W9SIO's email address' link. I hope this helps.
