Please Stand By...
27 January 2005 09:40Okkay, now that things have settled down a bit I have a moment to explain what's been happening.
There are LiveJournal reports of strange, even paranormal events today. Hopefully none will be too unpleasant. There was an accident in the lab and what we thought would be a neat new way to measure things went all quantum. Sure it measures, but the act of observing disturbs the observed. This gadget really observes, and therefore really disturbs. We tried to get a very good look at things. We didn't know how good a look. Think of weighing a single quark. That should give an idea of what happened. We were surprised by the resolution and kept trying to increase it. That was an insanely risky thing to do, we discovered. We won't be doing that again.
We seem to have punched a few holes in Reality before realizing what was going on. It's going to take us some time to return things to normal, if we can completely return to normal. We don't dare just shut the gadget off. We have to decrease the resolution slowly first. Hopefully there won't be a power interruption or... well, things will get far too interesting, very, very fast, so I've been told.
