Once again
irpooh's directions were ideal. And there were just enough signs on George Flagg Parkway to find the site. The gate was set up beyond a bridge, and I had expected the opening ceremonies to be at the bridge like Salisbury did it. I forgot the critical thing: this was not even a shadow of Salisbury. I wound up missing the opening stuff, which bothered me exactly not at all.
I wondered a bit, then found my way to where RST and Shattock were set up. Since I knew they'd be there, I kept on going after things seem to have ended. Aha! There they were! Spoke to
ginafae for a little while and gave her the print I brought. (A picture of Red Shetland having tested a very large sword - which went right through an anvil, saying "I'll take it!" to a very pleased rhino blacksmith.) then I followed the (much needed) signs to supposed archery area. This was on the edge of the participant parking area, of all places. While I was in the area, I met up with the lady whose name I keep forgetting (I think her name is Jennifer, but I remember the ponies' names just fine: Talon, Snowy, Rowdy). We talked for a while as the ponies were prepared for the day.
I watched the first RST show of the day - and probably cheered too much. I'm not used to yelling that much. I stayed to watch Shattock's Alice-in-Wonderland based show, which was familiar, but seemed, not quite all there. Maybe it was that it was the first show of the day, maybe it was that I used to seeing someone else in the "drunk" role - and he seems to me to carry it off better.
Spent more time with, or near the ponies. That put me next to the children's storytelling area which wasn't bad. Considering what all was around, I could easily have done worse. One thing did amuse me. The main road through the site is a public bicycle trail, and so there was bicycle traffic on it. As if the rest of the place wasn't off-period enough...
I'm not sure if it was Saturday or Sunday that I heard the end of a Shattock performance that had a telling bit. Instead of the usual bit about tipping if you enjoyed the show, someone added, something to the effect of, "If you enjoyed the show, please tell management how much more enjoyable it would be if it weren't hidden."
Sometime in the afternoon I met Nasira of Danza Mystique who had been watching the dance group that was there Saturday (Danza would be performing Sunday). She told me that the roll of film I took of them at IRF turned out, but she didn't have it with her. No big deal, I'd be around for a bit on Sunday.
Near the end of the day, but before closing stuff started, I went looking for someone to give my extra ticket to. Eventually I found a couple who said they knew someone in need, so I passed it along. Somewhere around then I got had a strange experience.
A woman (Elspeth, I think) came up to me with an odd question:
"May I kill you?"
"Why?"
"Amusement."
"Method?"
"Kiss of death."
It was then explained that she was taking photos of the "dead." Uh huh. Very silly, but what the heck, I went along with the gag. I was expecting the lipstick mark to end up on my cheek. I got it on the lips. I'm not sure she expected it to happen that way either. It just happened. Hopefully she didn't get any of whatever hit me Sunday night and Monday. I was also invited (ordered) to see the Vagantes show on Sunday.
Other than nibbling on some jerky samples, I didn't really eat. Friday's supper was that filling, but by the time I got back to the hotel I was getting hungry. Washed up, changed, called
foolscap001 who told me Billie was delayed. Uh oh. Rather than just wait alone, I drove to the apartment complex and picked him up and we went to some bookstore. There, we talked a bit and I had a light snack while we waited. We decided on the Mexican restaurant that was very near the Thai place.
We drove there, Billie arriving not too long after we did. And then we got to hear the latest costuming disaster she found herself trying to mitigate. Then we enjoyed a huge meal. I thought I was hungry. Not on that scale, I wasn't.

Date: 12 Oct 2004 18:19 (UTC)BTW, I take it back about Arch Linux. 0.7 beta is out, and it worked nicely, save that some programs expected /dev/* where they weren't any more under the influence of udev. I think I need to learn to edit the associated files.
