This is not a good year for the Iowa faires.
One in western Iowa in October is no more as the organizer(s) decided it was too much work for not enough (if any) payback.
The Des Moines faire changed sites just days before it happened. The original site was underwater.
Waterloo faire was cancelled for this year due to site, and other, problems. The site was underwater, and the weekend it is held has many events (of which it was once part) that use up the alternate venues in the area.
Now another faire, ARA in Osceola has cancelled for this year. The site is above water, but evidently suddenly drowning in red tape that was never a problem before.
Hotel reservations for Jay and I for ARA were made in just the last day or two. Those can now be cancelled as well.
The one bit of good news in all this is that now without ARA, I have nothing keeping me from attending the King's Island faire in Minnesota on the weekend that Minstrosity will be there. (Hrm, maybe Lindey's is a possibility.) At least nothing in my own schedule will muck things up. Hopefully by then (a week and a half from now) Hwy 169 will again be navigable. There was enough rain, fast enough, recently that part of it just north of Mankato is closed due to mudslides.

Date: 10 Jun 2004 01:24 (UTC)I may even be at King's Island for a few hours that Saturday, if I can arrange my schedule properly...on the way to Scranton. What fun.
Although it might give me an excuse to travel that day in garb...how's that for "freak the mundanes"? :-) At least getting through security would be different.

Date: 10 Jun 2004 05:43 (UTC)Well, it'll be good to see you at King's Island if you're there on a Sunday! Which weekend will Minstrosity be there?

Date: 10 Jun 2004 05:55 (UTC)Yep, ARA cancelled. So far it looks like just for this year. Other towns evidently were already expressing interest in having the draw of ARA for themselves.
Salisbury is no more. The Salisbury House folks stopped putting on a faire a couple years ago. The current Des Moines faire is put together by someone else.
Despite hearing of the relatively small size, I'm considering pretty much making a weekend of it. Minstrosity will be there the third weekend, so that's what I'm looking at. I considered a day this weekend, but I've been doing things the last two weekends and think I could use a break.

Date: 10 Jun 2004 05:51 (UTC)Des Moines says they did the best they could given the circumstances... I shall not say more.
As for Waterloo... once My Waterloo Days divorced themselves from the faire, I fear it was doomed. Were it still part of MWD then I would think a place could have been found for it pronto... as it was MWD attitude was "sink or swim" literally and that was before the park went under water.
I had to think a minute to figure out what Western Iowa Faire you referred to... DUH! The one that chose the dates for their first year around MY wedding and where we spent the weekend for our 1st anniversary. Now, we have to decide what do this year and by October, the pickins is pretty slim if you want a "smallish" faire. Yes, there's KC, but it's soooo big...
ooooo Lindey's.... I'm still remembering dinner there!!! If you do go, please say Hello from me and Scurvy and extend my congratulations to Josie.
Yes... indeed, it has been a good news/ bad news year for faires

Date: 10 Jun 2004 06:33 (UTC)RST'll Be there, Shattock also, and Owain Phyfe (who, if you haven't seen him, is a requirement for anyone who enjoys things period).
And anyways, I consider it the greatest faire I have ever been to.

Date: 10 Jun 2004 11:12 (UTC)I've already decided to go to King's Island, sorry. Peoria is a 6+ hour drive rather than a 2+ hour drive and I've already done that drive to (and admittedly beyond) Peoria once this year.
