RCFM: Saturday
2 June 2004 19:42Saturday things had taken shape and stuff was happening.
I was up later than usual, but then I hadn't gotten to sleep until late. Yep, it's a con... I spent more time in the dealer's area. I bought some books (Fasttrack and Kevin and Kell) from Bill Holbrook. I talked with Bill on and off through the day. When I mentioned I had left the K&K mailing list, he suggested I try it again. Supposedly one person responsible for a lot of list traffic left. Maybe I will give it another shot.
I was in line, roughly, to get something from Jim Groat again when it was time for the supersponsor's lunch/dinner. Since Jim Groat was the guest of honor, he had to go, and since I paid the supersponsor rate I was certainly going. We ate at a Chinese (and Japanese?) buffet place that was quite good. And Groat is always entertaining - he has a good many stories and is always willing to tell them. After the meal, he signed the RCFM pictures that we'd gotten. One joker suggested he sign it "To my dear friend, eBay." I'm not sure if he did that or not. He didn't sign mine that way.
When we all got back to the hotel I made my way back to the dealer's area again and eventually got a con badge from Groat. It took a while as since he has so many stories he's easily distracted when something comes up and he has a chance to tell one. I certainly don't blame him for spending time with Bill Holbrook. I'm not sure when, but sometime I mentioned Yoohoo and Groat indicated a craving. When my badge was done (hrm, I should get that scanned, huh?) I went up and got a bottle and gave it to him.
I also ordered a badge from BushyCat, to see what her take on things might be. She was quite busy so I expect it'll be a while before I see anything. She was trying to get sketchbook stuff done first since badges are cheaper to ship.
There was some setting up and practice for the variety show. I avoided that since one tune used was one I really don't care much for, and I wasn't going to be in the show, so I didn't really feel that I should be there anyway. I found that the Art Auction area was set up and open. I looked around and saw that the area was small, at least compared to AnthroCon (which isn't fair, I know, as AC is huge) but not filled. There was room for a fair bit more. One thing caught my eye: a stained glass "sun catcher" of a horse that moto42 had up. I put in a bid on it.
I watched the furry variety show, and KT taped it (but later efforts to transfer from tape to computer proved futile, much to several people's annoyance). As it was a variety show and not a masquerade, it wasn't just fursuitters and/or puppets. It was pretty much any fur who cared to perform. As RCFM is small, there wasn't all that much and there seemed to be quite a lot of guitar playing and singing. Some of that was quite good, some not so good, but none was truly bad. The bits that stood out were the more furry. The singing monkey puppet was quite a good bit, the TMBG skunk was memorable, the dragon plush/puppet stood out. And the three, count 'em, three Jaguar's acting to Cat's in the Cradle (the song I was avoiding earlier) was good. Good enough that I didn't mind the tune.
After that was the dance. I bolted as they had it LOUD. It was turned down a bit later, and I heard some complaints that it wasn't loud enough ("It's not too loud, you're too old." Uh huh. Beltone will thank you later.) I wasn't the only one who avoided it when it was turned up again. Marie, I think, decided that the sound level in the hall was about right and started playing with the bendy light sticks were around. The short ones glowed much more brightly than the longer ones. The longer ones, however, last a long time. I have a few yet, and while they aren't very bright anymore, they are still glowing now, on Wednesday night. These were activate sometime Saturday night. I'm impressed.
I did go back into the dance area when they started playing some swing style stuff, though I put in my earplugs first. When I'd had enough of that, or the music changed, or such, I looked in on the artist's alley area but spent most of the time in the con suite. I think I had one can of something caffeinated earlier and it had the expected effect. Some gal (who I am not naming) had clearly had more than enough alcohol was also there. She eventually declared everyone in the room to be cute. And some got told that again. And again. Repeatedly. Things eventually wound down - or at least I did. So I went back to the room and slept - using one of the long "dud" light sticks as a rather effective nightlight.
