Lately I've seen quite a few references to what I assume is a game of some sort, City of Heroes. I keep misreading it on first scan as City of Horses and wonder, for a moment, just how that would work.

Well, as long ago as Jonathan Swift, this was suggested. If you haven't read it, I urge you to take a look at Gulliver's Travels, PART IV. A VOYAGE TO THE COUNTRY OF THE HOUYHNHNMS.

The Houyhnhnms were horses. They ran the show, and their slaves or servants, who had human form, were called the "Yahoos". Most amusing, most accurate even today. And fun reading too. Everyone knows about Lilliput, most know about Brobdingnag. Those stories have been filmed and retold a hundred times. But Laputa, and the Houyhnhnms, have been all but forgotten by the world.

I had once started to read Gulliver's Travels many years ago and put it aside only a few pages into the first chapter. A couple years ago I did read the section you mention after having it pointed out by [livejournal.com profile] pharwarner. I had forgotten about any cities mentioned in it.

I recall the Yahoos more as marauding wildlife or such. I suppose it's time to go read that part again.
