I've taken to eating a cup (not a bowl, just a cup) of cereal most mornings as a way to get the day started and get vitamin supplements. Since I'm the only one eating the cereal, I can buy whatever cereal I desire. Not long ago I figured I might as well try some of the things I generally did not get as a kid and see how they were. So, seeing it on sale, I bought one of the smaller boxes of Trix.

I know kiddie-targeted cereals are sweet and colorful, but this was jarring. I'd been used to things like Chex and Cheerios which aren't the most exciting of things, I admit. I'd tried Captain Crunch or something like it and there was a bit more coloring and non-cereal flavor. Then there's Trix. In glorious Technicolor, breathtaking CinemaScope, and Stereophonic Sound! Well, colorful anyway. Bright "is it safe to eat this, really?" colors. And sweet. It's not so much cereal as candy: Candy for breakfast. Of course kids like it, but they probably shouldn't have it. I doubt I should have it.

I finished that box this past weekend and won't be getting Trix again. I expect I might work my way through the cereal aisle, or parts of it depending on what's on sale. But for now I'm happy to be back to the simple plain Cheerios.

Yeah, I used to like "Sugar Corn Pops"
Whoooooo! Not any more. They should be called
"Feeling my teeth rot while I chew."

The a-e actually prefers Wheaties and Cheerios to Trix (which are all made by General Mills). Trix has gotten a lot brighter over the years, and they've added more shapes; a similar thing happened to Lucky Charms (a fourth General Mills cereal).

The a-e generally buys Wheaties, Cheerios, one of the two Rasin Bran brands (Post or Kellogg's), Corn Flakes (usually Kellogg's), Rice Chex or Rice Krispies. Occasionally (such as very recently) he'll buy Froot Loops or Lucky Charms. Trix is a cereal that's dropped off the a-e's radar.

Trix isn't so much cereal as it is some sort of waxlike substance with sugar that goes "crunch." Last time I tried it, I had this slick stuff on the roof of my mouth for what felt like a week.

That said, my favourite cereal is Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Not terribly sugary, no need to ADD sugar (a fatal flaw of regular Cheerios; I found myself adding WAY more sugar than I'd get out of any other cereal), no nasty waxy residue. There're other cereals I like, like Honey Nut/Frosted Cheerios, Frosted Flakes, Raisin Bran... I used to like Froot Loops and Apple Jacks until they suffered the wax treatment.

Lucky Charms was good until they went spastic with the marshmallows...

I haven't had cereal with milk since I was a kid. I do buy Cheerios, Crispix or Total Raisin Bran for munchies (though I typed "Raisin Brain" just now...).

At the moment, however, I'm munching on some nori maki -- glutinous rice with a soy sauce / sugar / chili powder glaze, wrapped in seaweed.

Crunchy!

<SlappySquirrel> Whoa... *there's* a color found in nature.

One of my favorite cereals is Honey Bunches of Oats. Flakes and little honey-sweetened oat clusters. Tasty but not "kiddie"!
