vakkotaur: (test pattern)

I recall watching the Flintstones on weekday afternoons when I was a kid. I can't stand the show now, it seems far too annoying. But something did bug me then. I could deal with the time and setting. I could deal with the silly names that added 'rock' or 'stone' into well known names. I could deal with the animals as appliances, like the bird phonograph. What bugged me was the car. It wasn't that it shouldn't have been there, as there was much else that also shouldn't have been there. It was the rear axle. That bugged me. There was nothing to keep it from falling out. It's curious how I could put up with all the other assumptions, but that little bit bugged me. Everything else followed premise, but that just looked like cheating.

It's true!! There's nothing holding the rear axle in that would pull it along!

Reminds me of the one gag from "Top Secret" that falls flat. Remember "Top Secret"? From the makers of "Airplane!" and "The Naked Gun"? There's this scene where they're all in the Resistance hideout, and a grenade comes flying through the window. Albert Potato throws himself on top of it... and then there's this sort of vague explosion or explosions at the perimeter of the room that fling everybody up into the air, except Mr. Potato, who remains unharmed. My reaction to that was, "What the hell?"

Most of the rest of the jokes in that movie are funny (for example, the window-breaking gags in the same scene, based on the idea of people breaking out windowpanes with their gun barrels before firing through them... Nigel breaks a pane he doesn't need, simply because it's the only unbroken one left... Nick plays tic-tac-toe in a 3-pane-by-3-pane window, breaking O-shaped holes with his pistol while the Germans shoot out Xs with their machine guns... Deja Vu's windowpanes are so hard he can't break them, and he bends his gun barrel while trying, and then hits the window with a sledgehammer, which only causes the hammer's head to shatter...) Those jokes are funny because they involve weird inversions of logic. But the grenade gag just kinda throws logic out the window, so to speak.
