To avoid boring those who don't care...
1. Finally figured out how to get Mandrake/KDE/whatever to use my color scheme and have it not do insanely stupid things like put black text on a black background. Oddly, this seems to require find two separate places to change color settings. Not just too bad, though a bit irksome. More annoying is that some key pieces of the system take text and background colors from different places - ones you would not expect to have to reconcile with each other given the tools to set them. Also using [APPLY] doesn't always take - some things want to be closed and re-started to recognize any change happened. I can see how that can happen, but it did mean more fiddling around than expected.
2. The Great Editor Hunt (for a GUI linux editor that does at least as much as TextPad) seems to have ended. The final contestants were glimmer and Nedit. Glimmer seems to have everything except line wrap. Nedit seems to have everything but tabbed windows. Nedit wins. Line wrap is more important. Also, Nedit has a window selection menu and it looks like tabbed window behavior is in its future -- there is a patch for that, at least allegedly.
3. Hopefully "just" a hardware issue - found pasofino's sound card wasn't working. Seems to not even be detected. With luck all it needs is to be re-seated. Also found one pair of speakers seems to be lacking a working amplifier. Bah. Still, a relatively minor hardware issue.
To do:
- Get sound working.
- Consider 100BT while the case is open.
- Register Opera/Linux (consider the 6.1 beta).
- See about getting x-chat's notify to play sounds.
- Get file browsing working so pasofino can see percheron's files.
- Get Audacity for Linux.
- Look for whatever Linux program will replace IrfanView
- Get AbiWord.
- See about getting a printer working on/from pasofino.
- Clean up menus and remove programs (mainly text editors!) that
only clutter things up.
I think once all that is done I may be ready to give it a try for an extended time. Actually, even before that.
The 2k box will then have only a few advantages: SCSI drives, faster CPU, more RAM, and a CD burner. And those are hardware issues.
