Terms that had to replace the original.

A couple nights ago on IRC, kinkyturtle mentioned a few of these. Not all terms have completely changed (for example, mail) but the gist is there. I've been trying to add to the list...

The term for these "new names for old things", btw, is "retronym".

Rotary phone is interesting as there are pre-rotary phones (hand cranked things). Traditional/hand-drawn/Cel animation.. should've thought of that.

Hrm.. incandescent lights - fluorescent? But I recall things (like "Glow Little Glow Worm, Glimmer) that used 'incandescent' even though fluorescent lighting wasn't all that common.

I would suggest as a retronym "regular Coke", which before the advent of Diet Coke and Caffeine-Free Coke could simply be called "Coke" with a certainty of understanding. Also analog clock/watch, brought on by the digital clock/watch.

And possibly "World football", brought on by the creation of American football. =o)
