Murder on a Stick

I've only been to county fairs, never to any state fairs. Thus I have not been to the Minnesota State Fair. I do know that food on a stick is common, and that Minnesota takes it quite a ways (hotdish on stick?). So when there is to be an anthology of murder mysteries set at the Minnesota State Fair, there could be only one name for it: Murder on a Stick.

"hotdish on stick" can't be worse than "deep-fried macaroni & cheese on a stick", which I have seen.

Are you likely to be able to come to Rock Island/4 Kingdoms?

All sorts of strange things are out there. At one place in Wyoming I had deep fried cheeseburger, although not on a stick, as it was just that... odd. It wasn't as bad as it sounds, but I still don't need to do that again.

Rock Island/Four Kingdoms looks unlikely for us.

Food "onna stick" is so ubiquitous that even Terry Pratchett makes fun of it. From the familiar corn dog (eewww) to the bizarre (dried squid, which I'm told is popular in Japanese baseball parks) it has inflamed the popular appetite for decades, perhaps centuries. In the film Conan the Barbarian we were treated(?) to a scene of Schwarzenegger chowing down on some kind of leathery meat on a stick and growling "Good!" in appreciation of it.

The grossest "fair food" I've seen or heard of in the US is the batter-dipped, deep-fried Twinkie(tm). Yes, it exists and people queue up to buy them.

I've heard of deep fried Mars bars (yes, the chocolate bars). And I believe I heard of them being served at the Minnesota State Fair.

Those wacky Minnesotans! What won't they do?

I think I had one of those several years ago (or maybe it was Snickers), and a deep fried Oreo(?) though I do not recall if either were on a stick. It's one of those things that's an interesting novelty but I see no need to have more than one, ever.

I have not, as far as I can recall, had a deep fried Twinkie and I imagine it is just well that I have not.

Too bad you have to be from Minnesota to enter the contest, that might have been fun to try.

And have had something published, too. So you can't start here.

I may have a story published in the MFF conbook, I bet they won't count that though. :)

I didn't make it to the State Fair this year, but I heard Famous Dave's had chocolate-covered bacon on a stick there. I think that would work, as long as the bacon was really crispy. I also heard there was deep fried pickle on a stick at the MN State Fair.
