RCFM: Home again, home again...
Tuesday morning I was up later than I'd hoped but still earlier than anyone else, and got ready to leave. I got all my stuff packed up and loaded into the car and then went to check and make sure I'd not left anything behind. Someone who got floor space in the executive suite the night we were there had left something behind, and since JJ was on staff, it became his problem. I wanted to be sure there no problems from me. There weren't, or at least I don't know of any.
JJ tried to keep me from leaving by glomping onto my leg.. then legs. Seemed an odd thing from a jaguar (or a gargoyle, for that matter). A few goodbyes, I took care of things at the front desk, letting them know the room was still occupied, and then I was on my way. Well, almost. Nexus was still there and wondering where his ride, with his inventory, was. I stopped at the first exit in Tennessee for breakfast and also got water and ice for the cooler. I've seen dollar stores, but I saw a sign for an "88 cent store" but I didn't stop and have a look.
I spent the day and good part of the night on the road. I finally stopped in Center Point, IA (which seems to be the center of nothing) and stayed at a hotel that could be described as quaint in how trusting it was. It was actually rather reassuring that such a place still exists. It's the sort of thing you'd expect your grandpa to tell you about how nice things used to be. If I'd tried to drive home in one shot, I'd have arrived around 4 AM. I was ready to consider 2 AM and unpack later, but 4 AM is just too much.
I did notice something. The longer I was on the road, the stranger I felt whenever I stopped. I finally realized I was experiencing the motor vehicle version of something I noticed with a bicycle years ago. I got so used to the motion with everything I saw getting closer and going by that when I came to a stop, it was like stuff that was still was moving away from me. I'm not sure what that does for reaction time, and that was another reason to stop for the night.
Wednesday was a shorter drive, followed by unpacking, rest, recovery, laundry, catching up on LJ and such... nothing all that exciting. But Siouxland Renaissance Festival is this weekend, so things won't be dull for long, if at all.
I know Babs and company got home, though it took some doing to arrange transportation again. I have no idea what happened with Nexus. The folks (and they had their own car trouble on the way) who brought jugularjaguar to RCFM left earlier than he wanted to (he did know this would happen) and JJ did say something about taking a bus back, but I have yet to hear from him.
I didn't bring any glow sticks home this time, and I'm still not quite fully unpacked. I suspect things won't quite back to what passes for normal until next week, or perhaps the weekend of the 11th.
